Ralph's Story

After high school I joined the U.S. Army and remained there for another 21 years. I served most of my assignments in Germany. In 1972 I was in Hanau, Germany assigned to Fliegerhorst Kasern with the 122nd Maintenance Battalion. I returned to the United States for a few months to Ft. Jackson, South Carolina and headed back to Germany after a few months there. In 1976 I traveled to Wackernheim, Germany assigned to the 1/59th Air Defense Artillery. After my assignment in Wackernheim, Germany, in 1979 via Ft. Lee, VA, I was assigned to the Division Material Management Center (DMMC) at Ft. Polk, LA. In 1980 via Ft. Benjamin Harrison, IN for army recruiter training, I headed up to Ft. Hamilton, New York where I was further assigned to Babylon, NY army recruiting station out on Long Island. In 1984 I traveled to Goeppingen, Germany where I was assigned to the 299th Combat Support Bn. In 1987 I left Germany and headed via Ft. Lee, VA to Sacramento Army Depot where I retired from the U.S. Army in April 1993. After retiring from the army, in 1994 I moved from Sacramento, CA to Reno, NV where I presently reside. I just recently celebrated my 58th birthday, and I have been employed with the U.S. Postal Service for the past 15 years and I plan on retiring again in about 4 years. I was in my hometown Wrens, Georgia in 2008 to attend the funeral service for my brother, Johnny Gene Hines when I notice that not too much has changed in terms of structural development. er grown with plants but nothing has been constructed on this site at the intersection of Martin Stapleton Road and U.S. Highway 1. I had such a rich childhood and many wonderful experiences growing up there. Wrens, Georgia, is a beautiful place with awesome landscapes and a great climate and many of my family members and friends still live there. However, I have since fallen in love with the majestic snowcapped mountains and breathtaking inland lakes found in this region of the country where I currently reside, and I have decided that this is the place where I want to be laid to rest. I was reminded recently that when I lived in Wrens I was missing a front tooth and most people called me "SNAG". The U.S. Army erased the "SNAG" with dental work and a last name reference only when addressed by people in the military, and most of my friends now refer to me as just "FERGUSON". I have an ex-wife who is one of my best friends and we have a 28 year old son who lives in Elizabeth City, NC. We still remain somewhat of a unique and very together family unit. We are supportive in all endeavors and often rely on each other when making important life decisions. Classmates.com is such a wonderful tool that I have used to re-connect with acquaintances that I thought I would never hear from again in this lifetime. I am still searching for an army buddy "Crabtree" who was assigned to A Battery 299th Combat Support Battalion in Goeppingen. If anyone knows the whereabouts of "Crabtree" please let me know. God bless all and thanks for remembering.
