Barbara's Story

Barbara passed away from cancer on Wednesday July 29, 2009 at 5am. There will be a small memorial service in Bellingham on Sunday August 9th and a large service in Los Angeles on Friday August 14th. Here is her story: ~~~ I moved to Calif. in 1964, Studied voice/opera, married in 1968, Traveled the USA with husband, Jim, and our Christian Prison Ministry singing group, Dove Sounds, sang with Chamber Music group 35 years (USA and Europe), Had 1 child, daughter, Charity in 1974, Sang with L.A. Opera in the 80's, Worked several jobs including Special Ed. Teacher Assistant, Receptionist and, from 1994 to 2008, Phlebotomist (Vampire). * I've been active in church all my adult life and have been choir director, hand-bell director, and paid soloist/section leader, currently a soprano section leader at an Episcopal Church in West Hollywood. * My husband has Parkinson's dementia and has been in a nursing home for 6.5 years. When we were first married he was cast as "Snorky the Elephant" on the Banana Splits Adventure Hour. I guess that's his big claim to fame. * My daughter, now age 35, received her bachelors degree in voice and music composition and her masters in library science. She married June 21, 2007 and is living in Wales with her husband, Mark. (No grand children yet) The picture attached is with them August '06. She is the Cardiff University Music Librarian. I have been to Wales to celebrate Christmas with them the last 2 years. What a great excuse to travel abroad. * I am active in Eastern Star (it was all that Rainbow Girls influence) and I was doing a lot of singing for that organization on a local and national level until I became too weak. * In 2004 I...Expand for more
was diagnosed with cancer - Adreno-cortical carcinoma -very rare - and after surgery had 2 years of oral chemo. I was diagnosed before Christmas '07 with a recurrance of multiple abdominal tumors. I had IV chemo from Feb.'08 through June. That had some success but now the tumors have metastasized to my liver and bone. I expect I may be having some radiation and surgery, and possibly more IV chemo. * I attended our class reunion in 2004 and had a really great time. I was just sorry that certain friends wern't there. * I don't get up to Bellingham as often as I would like to, especially since all my family is still there and we are all getting older. I was able to spend three weeks there in August 2008.I'll be back up this Aug. ('09) (God willing) to celebrate my brother's 80th Birthday. It's so beautiful there and I will always miss it. * I would like to state that my year book goal was to sing at the Metropolitian Opera and I did achieve my goal in 1998, when I went to New York to sing a concert at Carnegie Hall (yes, as a soloist) in the Bach Magnificant. My daughter and I were doing some sight seeing and when we went over to the Met, I stood right outside the front entrance and sang an Opera aria, accapella. She video taped it so I have the proof. I have to say, I drew a crowd and received "thunderous applause". * * unfortunately, I am not allowed to give out my CaringBridge web site in this bio, but after .org you can put in /visit/barbaradove which might give you access, if you can figure this out. * I am on Facebook which I find quite amusing - and addictive. You are welcome to become my "friend" there, as long as I remember you after all these years.
