One of Pat's favorite quotes is:"Inasmuch as ye have done it unto the least of these, my brethren, ye have done it unto Me" by the Savior and "It's better to be a has-been than a never-was." by Wayne Herrin, former 3x sweepstakes winner of the Rose Parade, floatbuilder. Pat considers herself a has-been and not a never-was. ---------------------------------- I remember so many of the kids from John Mills because we all lived there for the whole 8 years of school. I have quite a few of those school pictures still if anyone wants them emailed. There was no such thing as kindergarten that time period. First grade was our first year. We had a candy store across the street from the school where we all went to see if we could get a "Winner" out of the gumball machine to win a free nickel candy bar. Most of us loved the penny candies because we didn't have much money for the king size nickel and dime bars. The movie theater was called the Elm and I remember going there every Saturday with my brothers and friends. We'd get 20 cents or a quarter. 11 cents for the movie and the rest for popcorn and candy. 20 cartoons, a newsreel and 2 movies. Then we'd walk over a mile home through the Circle. All done safely with no worry o...Expand for more
f being kidnapped. I remember first through 4th grade was on the main floor of school and Mr. Dahm was our principal. We were all scared of him because he would give spankings. He was in the "Ivory Tower" as it were. A special office on the brown and tan marble staircase. Then 5th through 8th grades were on the second floor. It was so exciting if the teachers ever sent us upstairs when we were little. Thos guys up there were HUGE!!!! people. We felt grown up just to go up those stairs. And then came the day when we were in 5th grade. UPSTAIRS!!!! US!!!!! WOW! On the back of our graduation picture I wrote every kids name so it's interesting to remember them and probably many are on Facebook now. At least if they are still alive. My Facebook name is Pat Occleshaw Decker if you want to connect. We would be in our 70's now --- I'm 72 in 2012 -- so many would have to be gone by now. I remember so many that lived in their same house for those 8 years. Joanne Kedrock, Jackie Fox, Roberta Bloom, Dorothy Peterson, Jackie Aument, Joan Klaproth, Dominic Sparacino, Harold Nicholson, Robert Gustafson, Jack Mueller, Ted Walters, and on and on. "Waynie" Peterson who was retarded and such a sweet kid, Joe and his sister Anita Bucek who were teased unmercifully. I wasn't one of the popular girls but I loved school and loved all the good teachers we had. Mrs. Virginia Hoskins our 4th grade teacher was my all time favorite. Then there was "Coach", Mr. Johnson, Mrs. Lucille Langdoc (who had us say good morning to her bust of Longfellow every day), Mr. Mariana our math teacher that either loved or couldn't stand us. And you better be on his good side! My dad owned Schellenberger Chevrolet on Grand Ave. near Harlem and that's what brought my family to Elmwood Park. I had 3 brothers. Butch (Jim, Jr.) Ralph and Bill. My dad sold the store and we moved to Fox Lake when we were teens. So that's a little about me. Hope to read some stories of classmates.
