Sidney's Story
I enlisted in the Army September 11, 1947 (9/11) took Basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, upon graduation from Basic training, I along with my entire company was shipped out to Pittsburg, California. There we were processed and given our overseas assignment, some of us got Japan, some got Okinawa, it was hard luck to get Korea. None of us had ever heard the word Korea let alone knew where it was. We were transported overseas by Troop ship, which was a real traumatic experience for most of us. We were plagued with daily sea sickness, stormy seas and lousy food for those that were not too sick to eat. The journey took 14 days after a stop in Okinawa to get the deck of the ship welded back after having been ripped apart by the storms we encountered. Finally, we arrived at the Inchon Harbor. Disembarking was really...Expand for more
disconcerting to all of us. The ship could not dock because of the extreme tide conditions of the Inchon Harbor.
We were required to throw our duffle bags over the side of the ship onto a flat steel barg 30 to 35 feet below the deck of the ship. (some of the bags even burst open from the impact of landing on the hard barge deck. We had to climb over the side and work our way down the rope ladder that was attached to the ship. In addition to this, we had to contend with the extremely hostile wind and freezing temperature. This was the lastter part of December which is one of the coldest months in Korea.
I will continue this story at a later time, be patient I will do it for sure
I always wanted to be a Army Officer when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a bad idea. As it turns out, they were wrong.
