William's Story

I work as an Addiction Specialist/ Therapist. Private Practice in Arlington, MA. (right-turn.org) Work mainly with people that are dual-diagnosed. Adjunct Professor UMASS-Boston and North Shore Community College. Addiction Studies/Human Services. Preceptor for first year residents medicine/psychiatry Harvard Medical School on addiction and dual-diagnosis issues. My free-time is spent working on and around my house, writing and reading, refurbishing estate smoking pipes, traveling with my wife Yvette up to Maine and Nova Scotia, going to sporting events with my sons (Go BoSox, Bruins, Patriots, Celts!!), visiting the MFA in Boston, going to concerts from "Rock" to "Opera." There is a saying in the field of addiction about family dynamics: "you grow up saying you will never become like them, you become like them, then you run away from home and become an orphan (been in Massachusetts since 1974, no regrets. I have been sober since December 10th, 1985. I say I am "recovered," not in recovery. O.K. I guess I will start to use the story wizard now, lol. Let's see, how do I blow off steam, by working out, that was an easy one. Hmm, the wildest thing I ever did in HS? I don't know if it was the wildest, however I put Jeanne Burke on my shoulders so she could unscrew the Drinkwater Place street sign in Riverside (named after my great-grand-dad). My half is in my "Man Cave," that being my two-car barn loft garage, and Jeanne tells me her half is on a wall in her home. When I go off to work in the morning I have to have my stainless-steel coffee tumbler filled with piping hot black Kenyan coffee. Do I have a hero? No, not really. I have people that I look up to for their expertise in my field and other fields for that matter. I am always impressed by intellectual prowess. Currently I live in Wakefield Massachusetts. Beautiful Town with a great lake, people walk, run, inline skate the lake year-round. The town even plows the side walks in the Winter, 3.2 miles around. Previously, we lived in Melrose, also a great family town. While the demographics are the same, population, make-up, white collar, blue collar, education, Wakefield is 13.9 sq miles w...Expand for more
hile Melrose is 4.1 sq miles. I forget, what is Greenwich, something like 60 sq miles? lol. Another Q from the story wizard is what teacher would you like to see again, hmmm, probably Mrs. DiCarlo. She was there for me in some difficult emotional times, nuf said. In college I was a member of PKT and have become active with them again over the past several years. My undergrad is basically a blur. Partying, raising Hell, just really not caring about anything really. I completed my Masters' this past May, I remember all of it, lol. Another question pertains to happiness. Well, for myself happiness comes and goes. I am never contented for very long. So long as there are sick and suffering i feel the need to assist however I can. However, when I leave work days, I leave work. I am not my career. While it is an intricate part of my being, it is not the totality of who I am. Happiness is being with Yvette and my sons as much as possible. My next goal is to find a PhD program and finish the editing on my first book I am hoping to get out in the Spring of 2010; 25 stories from Public Detox. The stories illustrate how addiction and mental health issues cross all socio-economic lines. Hmmm, what happened to my first crush, I believe she married a guy that went to HS with my older brother Jack...interesting. My best friend would tell you I'm compassionate, caring, genuine, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as Humorous, Moody. Basically Preppie, Khakis, white dress shirts with button-down collars, polo shirts, kiltie-tassel loafers, GAP bluejeans, tennis sneaks, sports and college hoodies, suits by B2, tons of shorts for year round wear, etc I share my home with my mother-in-law. She is 88 years young. Up at the crack of dawn, cooks cleans around the house. I enjoy her wisdom and company. For the first five years I was married to her daughter I was still running wild on the comedy scene, stand-up by night, comedy writer voice talent by morning for WBCN in Boston and partying my ass off. Not once did this woman criticize me. All she would ask me is there anything she could could do to help me, which I find a Blessing.
