Marlene's Story

I always wanted to be a veterinarian when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a bad idea. As it turns out, they were probably right. I blow off steam by taking walks and I like to do my genealogy research, which gets my mind off things and focused on something else. I think my heroes are strong and influential women. I am amazed that it took women an additional over 50 years to gain the right to vote over black men. I think that struggle still goes on. Look at our current president and Hilary Clinton, not that she would have been that great as president. But the women suffragettes I admire and some day I hope to go to Seneca Falls to see the Womens' Hall of Fame. Other women heroes would be Joan of Arc, Queen Elizabeth I, Catherine the Great, Hellen Keller, and of course her teacher, Ann Sullivan, and many others. I have lived in Johnstown, because I went to FMCC there. I lived in Albany because I used to work at Albany Med. Then I moved to N. Troy (Lansingburgh) to get away from Albany and finally to Averill Park because my husband wanted to live in the city and I wanted to live in the country so we compromised and moved to the Burbs. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Kim Brewer, because we were good friends until she moved to wherever she moved to.. I have one son and what I have learned the most from him is that I'm not too electroni...Expand for more
cally savy, but I keep trying to learn. The teacher I would like to see again is Mr. Winning. He helped me to plow through algebra and geometry. I wish he didn't leave because I really needed him to get me through trig. If I won $100 million, I'd give most of it to my family (I have a very large family), then spend the rest on nice facilities for senior citizens (which some day soon, I'll be, decent parks and play areas for children and bringing back things MADE IN the USA!!!!!. I am sick to death of made in CHINA. If I had one do-over, what I would do differently would be, have more self confidence. I let too many people talk me out of things I know now I could have done. My oldest friend is Renee Bennett. She is one of the few people I liked instantly. We have been friends since I came to Mayfield in second grade and we are still friends. I have done her genealogy and have found that her ancestors and mine have been friends since the Mayflower. In fact, I have just recently connected her and I as 10th cousins once removed because of the Mayflower connection. I don't know if everyone from Mayfield knew that my older brothers were twins, but that happens about every other generation in my family. My grandfather and great uncle were twins. Now I have twin granddaughters. They are as unalike as my brothers were. I love being a grandmother to the twins. I call them "Pride and Joy".
