Michael's Story

Life? So the new photo shows that I finally got to meet Gandhi. Pay no attention to the fact that he has been dead for 60 years, and that my shirt is wet. Recent events in Mumbai stimulated a new posting on my blog --- thelocalisglobal.blogspot.com It may be of interest to some. Allen Ruff gave a reading from his novel in Na' Haven in October, and it was nice to go down there and see a bunch of the old folks. I've been traveling, teaching, and learning for 40 years. high-school last 20 years ... have fun with kids every day and laugh, all my doctor and lawyer friends wish they could do what i do. i wrote and published a bunch of really obscure scholarly stuff in the 80's, lately more curriculum related stuff and essays for teachers of world history, culture, and art. i am a camera maniac, see photos with comments. if anyone has a rolleiflex lying around that they have no use for please contact me, i promise to use it and not to sell it. i'd buy a used one today were it not for the need to pay tutition for four more years. i don't understand where these colleges come off with these fees. whenever the university of wisconsin (beloved alma mater) calls me to tap me up, i advise them to save money by removing some of the useless faculty in certain useless departments. mean. languages: francais, israeli hebrew, moroccan arabic, mandarin chinese, bollywood-ish hindi, viennese from in-laws (mostly words for food and pastries). have travled a lot. still close with and live near hank murray, in touch with allen ruff and ken reuben. tsvai kinder, eine frau. School sorry but i do not wish to name the girl i "adored" in hillhouse! i was in love with all my female french teachers. i have wonderful memories of the 3 different young women teachers who worked with us in theatre. and there was...Expand for more
a fabulous teacher, one of those yale divinity school wives who seemed in large supply --- who was wonderful to me in 12th grade --- her name was Eva Babbitt. that's what mattered/matters the most when a teacher shows a kid that they care about him or her. i do not recall my english teachers in grades 11 and 12 as inspiring or the least bit interesting. but norma greene in u.s. history was one of a kind, and definitely knew what she was doing and why she was doing it. she also coached debate club which was great fun and probably the most important thing i did in h.s., after the theater. somewhere and somehow along the line hillhouse gave me what i needed to emerge later as a Ph.D scholar and author. who knows how or what, exactly. it's a mystery. i attended the univ. of wisconsin (not too many happy memories, unfortunately), tel aviv university, new york university, and the american university in cairo. i have been very fortunate to have traveled a great deal: israel 2 years, morocco 2 years, egypt 3 months, india and china 6 weeks each on fulbrights. upon retiring we hope to be regulars on flights to paris london, amsterdam (direct from hartford!) and so on. rent places and hang out for a few weeks. daughter soon to graduate college and -- who knows? son about to graduate high school and -- who knows? he cringes in embarrasment when i order in (mediocre) chinese in the restaurants and try to engage in conversation with anyone there, including himself! he has his sights set high, a born intellectual and i will leave this earth knowing that i have left much better versions of myself, with their individualities intact, to carry on.
