Curt's Story
I am an Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the University of California, Irvine. I continue to have an active research program and am a consultant to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). I direct a project funded by the NIMH that recently was extended for another five years. My group is exploring the impact on the human brain and behavior of unpredictable maternal signals during fetal and infant life (see website at conte center.uci.edu/sandman/. My .current studies had their origins in the Nobel Prize winning laboratory in New Orleans while a graduate student and then as a professor at The Ohio State University during the 1970’s.
My primary residence is in Laguna Beach but we spend about half time in a second home in Breckenridge, Colorado. We enjoy...Expand for more
skiing (goal is to ski as many days and as I am years old), hiking and biking. I am injured on the slopes at least once a year—this year it was a strained hamstring after a 100 foot fall—an acceptable price for the privilege of access to the thrills and challenges that increase each year.
My wife of 33 years, Jennifer Barron, is a clinical psychologist. Between us we have 4 girls and 3 grandchildren. We have many interests including an extensive and growing art collection partially described in Laguna Beach Art--first volume/edition, page 46+, huge collection of primarily California wines (and primarily Pinot Noir) and other ridiculous symptoms of OCD. We are active politically and involved in various civil rights causes (bred from my exposure to racial injustice in the deep south).
