Shirley's Story

After graduation I pursued my radio broadcasting license from the FCC. I went to work for the Country station WJLS AM/FM as a disc jockey. I later joined the Army where I was a Technical Draftsman. I received a Medical Discharge in 1986 due to a broken leg. I'm a classified disabled veteran. After the military I returned to radio and worked on the air at WWNR AM and enrolled at Beckley College, majoring in Business Management for a couple years. I later moved to the Scenic City Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1989, a city that I love very, very, very much, where I call my second home. I started working at the R & B station WNOO AM as Music Director, Assistant Program Director and on the air from 1989 until 1993 I also filled as News Director at times when it became necessary. I attended Chattanooga State Technical Community College from 1989 until 1991 where I received my Associate Degree in Business Management in 1991. I also attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga to pursue my B. A. degree in Communications. While at WNOO AM I had the chance to interview the rap group the Fat Boys and R & B recording artist Usher. Since my first start in radio was at a Country station, in mid 1993 I decided to work at the Country station, US 101 (WUSY FM), the number one station in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This was a real working experience that I really enjoyed. I had the chance to meet comedian Jeff Foxworthy, Country music recording artists Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, Trisha Yearwood, Kathy Mattea, Tim Mcgraw, Travis Tritt and Martina McBride. I've had the opportunity to meet other celebraties, pro basketball, baseball and football players as well as politicians, but there are to many to mention. One of my most prized possessions and collectors item is a an album autographed by Conway Twitty. After a few years at WUSY-FM, I later moved across town and went to work for WDOD-FM, which was the other Country station in Chattanooga, TN. All of the music artists and other celebraties are some of the cooliest people that I've ever met. Everyone was really nice and down to earth. I also had the opportunity to tour the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN. I've also met recording artist Al Green and also interviewed New York Yankees great Mickey Mantle and also met former Atlanta Hawks player Dominique Wilkens along with the entire Atlanta Hawks basketball team when Dominique was a player with that sports organization at that time. The Hawks played a pick up basketball game against the UTC Mocs basketball team (UTC my alma mater). I obtained a few autographs from some of the players. I got the chance to see Michael Jordan play a minor league baseb...Expand for more
all game when he retired from basketball and joined the minor league Birmingham Barons baseball team. The Barons played the Chattanooga Lookouts minor league baseball team in Chattanooga. Meeting all of these people was due in part to working in the radio, television and the news media. I expanded my interest and branched out to do television and radio for a while together. If it wasn't for my lifelong love and interest in broadcasting, I never in a million years would have met any of these people. While I lived in Chattanooga, there never was a dull moment, there was always something interesting going on. After working in the radio industry for over 20 years combined, I've had the opportunity to work with different formats of music which includes R & B, Country, Jazz, Rock, and Pop. The best time I've had while I was in the broadcast industry was when I worked at WUSY-FM in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Although I've had fun with the other radio formats, Country radio is the most exciting and has the most flexability in what you can do on the business side of the industry. Country music is also about the stories that the songs tell. Stories that everyone can relate to through lifetime experiences no matter who you are or where you may be in a point in your life. Foremost, radio is a business, but along with the business side, I've had a great time (LOTS OF FUN) with all the music and the people that I've met and worked with. The craziest bunch of people that anyone could ever imagine, I worked with them.... In 1999 I later decided that I wanted to see the country and get paid for doing it. I attended Chattanooga State Community College's truck driving school and obtained my CDL drivers license. I signed on with Ozark Motor Lines in Memphis, Tennessee and became an owner/operator OTR driver with my then husband. I've been to 46 of the lower 48 states. The only lower 48 states I haven't been to is North Dakota and Maine. Some of my favorite cities include Salt Lake City the best, Chicago, Portland, Memphis, Las Vegas, Boise and several others. In 2003 I moved back to Beckley, WV to be closer to my family. I decided finish my college studies and received my B. A. degree in Communications from Mountain State University in May 2007. I've had the time of my life and there's more to go, hopefully. I enjoy doing and experiencing different things that no one else would ever think of or ever attempt to do (example, like driving a tractor/trailer). Hey, I get bored easy, I like to stay busy and do new things. That's my life story. I'm not finished until the Lord calls me back to our Heavenly Home. May God bless all of my true friends.
