Bruce's Story

It looks like my profile was written in 2009! And life has certainly changed since then.
Most of my life plans were uprooted and redirected in May of 2010 when cancer had the final say in Karen’s battle with it. Things moved quickly that month and with a couple of retirement incentives – state and local – I walked away from Reed City High School in June after teaching there for thirty-six years. I have never looked back.
That summer I began volunteering at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. I was a docent there for ten fulfilling years and have now moved on to volunteer at Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids. It is an amazing place to volunteer.
I moved to Allendale in 2012 and am happy to be closer to my three grandchildren and life in this part of the state. Allendale is midway between Lake Michigan and Grand Rapids and I think I have the best of two very differ...Expand for more

In 2014 I met a delightful woman at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. In December of 2015 we were married at the museum – almost storybook! Rita volunteered at the art museum for five years and we moved to Meijer Gardens together in 2021.
In 2009 I embarked on a genealogical journey that has been a wonderful ride with so many wonderful discoveries. I have loved the research and the writing of stories of many ordinary, but amazing people. Hopefully it will be ready to print and put in my families’ hands yet this year. I left MHS with thoughts of studying History and English before art captured my imagination, but this project has drawn me back to those earlier loves. For anyone who loves history there is no better project. I often think of Miss Brown when I’m writing and am thankful that I received an excellent education in little old Mesick.
