Efren's Story

After high school(1990) I attended the University of Nevada and was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. In 1995, I earned my B. A. degree in Criminal Justice. While at the University I competed as a pugilist for the UNR Boxing team. I was fortunate enough to be the only boxer to go undefeated in collegiate bouts, win 3-National Boxing Championships(91,92,93), and win the Outstanding National Boxer of the Year award 2 years consecutive. My only loss was in 93, in Negril, Jamaica against a open class amateur boxer that went on to box in the Pan American Games. In 94, my senior year I was unable to compete as a result of an inner ear infection that affected my equilibrium. That year I retired from boxing and never made a professional debut. In 96, I came out of retirement to box as a lead role in the movie "Body and Soul" produced by Ray "Boom Boom" Manincini a legendary professional boxer. My brother Jose a boxing champion also appeared in that movie. We both had the privilege to work with Raquel Welch's daughter, Tania Welch. Once I received my Degree from the University of Nevada I began to work for Washoe County Juvenile Services as a Work Program Supervisor. In 96, I was hired by the Carson City Juvenile Probation Department as a Probation Officer. In, 2001, as a Juvenile Probation Officer I received the City Employee of the Year Award for my commitment and service with Hispanic families in the community. In 2001, I was appointed to serve as a United States Pretrial/Probation Officer for the District of Nevada. My duties included working with federal judges, the U.S. Attorney's Office and supervising federal defendant's that were arrested by the Secret Service, FBI, DEA, Homeland Security and U.S. Marshal Service, etc. In 05, I became certified as one ...Expand for more
of a hand full of federal firearms instructors for the District of Nevada. In 06, I transferred my duty station to the Federal Courthouse in Las Vegas. In 2007, I got engaged, to an incredible woman, left the Federal Judiciary and returned to Reno, Nevada with my fiancee. I'm once again employed as a Juvenile Probation Officer for Carson City, Nevada, doing a job that I thoroughly enjoy and plan to retire from. I continue my involvement in boxing. I'm an assistant boxing coach for the University of Nevada Boxing Team. Additionally, for the past 5 years I have also been employed as an Inspector for the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Our duties include: drug testing both UFC and professional boxers, assuring that fighters are prepared for combat, escorting them in and out of the ring or cage between rounds, and observing trainers while they work with their fighters. I have had the privilege to work with the likes of Oscar de la Hoya, Chuck Ludell, Bernard Hopkins, Tito Ortiz and most recently FLoyd Mayweather. Although I'm not married and have no children, I have a beautiful fiancee and hope to have a family of my own someday. I have been blessed with an incredibly supportive and loving family. Without my mom's persistence and determination I probably would never have gone to college and be where I am today. My mother and step-father Sam Burk reside in Las Vegas. My brother Jose also lives in Las Vegas, and was married last year. He has a beautiful one year old son. My sister Estela makes her home in Chicago, Illinois with her husband, Dr. Danilo Coite and their three children. My youngest sister, Carmela resides in Spring Creek, Nevada with her husband Colt Creamer and their three children. I can honestly say that I have the most incredible nieces and nephews!
