Judy's Story

After I graduated from Halsted, our whole family moved back down to Greenwich Village, where I had lived the first seven years of my life. My parents hated the suburbs and really missed the eccentric and rather bohemian life they had left when moving to Riverdale. I graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and then attended NYU, majoring in theater. One day I saw an ad in Backstage for people to do ¿puppet¿ voices. I didn¿t even know what that meant but it sounded different enough to peak my interest. I auditioned, got the job and was soon on my way to becoming a puppeteer, performing fairy tales in the NYC public school systems. My brother-in-law, my sister Jill¿s husband at the time, told me about an organization the was specifically for people involved in puppetry. I attended their annual convention in Miami and there pet Bob Brown who was to become my husband six months later. We¿ve been married for forty three years, and creating , producing, and performing puppet shows around the world all this time. I come up with the ideas, he creates and builds the puppets, I direct the productions and we both perform. Our first big break came when we were commissioned by Orbach¿s Department Store on 34th Street in NYC to create a Christmas productions in their four front windows. Each window offered a short, ten-minute marionette production performed to music, each scene complete within itself but then continued in the next window. The shows ran continually, one after the other, for ten hours a day. We hired puppeteers who worked in teams of three, each team performing one complete cycle, then the other team would take over. The following year Woman¿s Day Magazine had us create The Barn Yard Frolics, a puppet production with puppets, set, and script, published in the magazine. This led to my writing three Christmas scripts for the magazine over the next several years. Two years later we were asked by the Smithsonian to come to Washington, DC and create the Smithsonian Puppet Theater. We performed twelve shows a week, changing the productions ever...Expand for more
y two months or so. The theater was very popular but Bob and I hated working for the government, with all the red tape, and getting permission for this committee or that supervisor before being allowed to do anything. After two years we jumped at the chance to get out of the contract and go out on our own. It was about this time that we met Fred Rogers of Mr. Roger¿s Neighborhood. We became one of the ¿neighbors¿ on the show. Several times a year we¿d go up to Pittsburgh for a week or so and film a whole bunch of shows. We worked with Fred from 1968 through 1975. It was also about this time that we began to get involved with creating productions designed to be performed with symphony orchestras. This was right up my alley. I have always loved classical music, especially ballet music, and these projects have been my favorite of everything we¿ve ever done. We began with Peter and the Wolf, commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra, was soon followed by Petruska, Cinderella. Carnival of the Animals, and Peter Pan and Wendy, produced for Youth Concerts and Family Friendly Concerts. We then tackled several adult operas, El Retablo De Maese Pedro and L¿Enfant et Les Sortleges. During this time we had three children. Michael born in 1965, now married for twelve years and working as an artist and fine art photographer, Krista, born in 1975, married for seven years and expecting their first child at the end of May, and working as the manager of the 37 Arts Theater complex in NYC, and Peter, unmarried and working as a DJ and sound-tech for movies and video in VA and NYC. We still live in Virginia, just outside of Washington, DC. We live in an old barn, from the 1840¿s. It looks a lot more charming than it really is. Old, creaky, spooky, drafty, but very picturesque. Our garden is wonderful with two ponds, lots of paths, very wild and overgrown. It¿s actually been designated as Accredited Wildlife Sanctuary But enough about me . . . I¿d love to hear from all of you. I had to miss the reunion last year because I had just had my hip replaced the day before.
