Amy's Story

Hi Everyone! This is basically what is going on with me... I am 34 years old now and a Registered Nurse at Emory. I spent 10 years earlier on in my career as a paramedic, 7 years of which I worked for Grady EMS. To put it all in chronological order, after high school I waitressed for a while, wasted some time but pretty quickly got into EMT and then paramedic school. When I was 21 I went to work for Grady EMS running 911 calls in the city of Atlanta. While I was working at Grady I moved to Athens and went to UGA to get a BS in Chemistry. I didn't finish, but came close. Then I got married in 2002. While I was married I went back to college at the University of West Georgia, but decided to get a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing and took my RN boards. My ex-husband and I lived in Villa Rica for 4 years, so that is why I went to the University of West Georgia, plus I think they have the best BSN program in the state (but of course I am biased!) Another update on me, I got stage IV thyroid cancer in 2005 but am disease-free now. That was quite a trip! Whew! Hope I never have to go through that again, but I'm grateful to have made it. I got a divorce (never had kids) just last July (2007). I think the stress of the cancer was too much for a marriage that wasn't strong to begin with. So I moved from Villa Rica to Decatur and live right across the street from my parking deck for work. I relax by doing Sudoku puzzles, New York Times c...Expand for more
rosswords and playing either chess or Scrabble on the computer. Somtimes I also play blackjack. I also have been reading lots of books lately. Now I am following the "story wizard" questions that help you write about yourself. My hero is my mom. She put up with me as a teenager! My inspiration comes from lots of things, mainly my patients at work. One person from the past I'd most like to see again is my old best friend, Debbie Wootten (Onstine). We do keep in touch, but just barely, and I think I will drive down to Florida and see her soon. I miss her! I have a dog, a German Shorthaired Pointer, and his name is Max. He is full of energy and loves chasing the ball and going for long walks in the woods on trails. The "story wizard" says "Life doesn't always turn out the way you expect. What's been your biggest surprise?" Well, mine was cancer. Man, that was a shocker. I went in for bronchitis and after a few tests and a biopsy I had cancer and after surgery I had metastatic cancer. The teacher I would most love to see would be my drama teacher from Norcross High. I forget her last name but her first name was Ellen. She was always so nice to me and so supportive and positive. I must say, I am finally truly happy; I am happy doing what I am doing as a nurse and I am content with my life and feel like I am living my dreams! Drop me a line. I'd love to hear from some old friends and I hope life have been good to you so far! Amy
