Jimmy's Story

My last 50 years. I graduated in May 1957 from HHS. Two weeks later I went into the Marine Corps. Why the Marines? I had an uncle who served in the Marines in World War II and my Dad was a Seabee in the Navy in WWII. My Dad landed on Iwo Jima with the Marines and he told stories about the Marines landing that day. I served 3 years on active duty and 3 years in the reserves. While in the Marines I went to the Atomic, Biological and Chemical Warfare Defense (ABC) School. I made the highest grade in the class and they invited me back to become an instructor. I taught Biology and Chemistry at the school. When I was released from active duty in June 1960, I took a job with Trust Company Bank in Atlanta and also enrolled at Georgia State University at night. I got both my bachelor's and master's degree from Georgia Sate on the GI bill. Later I picked up an Associate's degree and a Law degree. I always enjoyed school and in a way I became a professional student. I always wanted to learn new things and to broaden my knowledge. I went to New York City and took a job with an investment banking firm. I rose from trainee to Vice President and National Sales Manager for the oldest firm on the New York Stock ...Expand for more
Exchange. I retired from the securities industry in the early 1980s and took a teaching position at Southern Tech in Marietta. I retired from Southern Tech in August 2005 after suffering a heart attack. I married a Hapeville girl in November 1958, Cynthia Moore (HHS class of 1958). We had 4 children (3 girls and a boy) Cynthia and I got a divorce in 1972 after I went to New York. I remarried in February 1978 to Carol Brady. She had 2 children by a previous marriage. Carol and I adopted our grand-daughter in 1997. Chloe is now 18 and is a senior in high school. We have lived in Duluth Georgia since 1989. I am now writing two books: one is a chronology of my family in the 20th century. Basically, it is a book on genealogy. The second book is about my growing up in Hapeville, GA. It covers my life growing up in a small suburban town in the 1940s and 1950s. It was a special time for me and I want to record that period of time and that special place. That's how I spent the last 50 years. It has been quite an experience. I appreciate my classmates more and more each day. I now realize that family and old friends are more important than I ever realized. Thanks for the contribution you made to my life.
