Valerie Kaiser:

CLASS OF 1975
Hempstead, NY

Valerie's Story

Left Sacred Heart and put myself through College and Medical School. Was engaged but that didn't work out and 6 months later in 3rd yr of med school met my husband while taking out my old roommate who was in town. I saw him from across a room and knew I would marry him eventually, went up to him as he was alone and from his demeanor said "How come you're so shy?" Turned out he was. He's a professional musician, lived all over the country. Eventually he had to work as a designer for an engineering firm, and when we had kids he left work to raise them. Before the Kids came along we traveled to Alaska, Hawaii twice, the Myan ruins, Cancun, Arizona deserts, Quebec, Kennebunkport (MA), Bermuda, Destin Fl., San Francisco, and with the Kids to Disney World twice, the other place near there, I can't remember, again to Destin, Montauk, Palm Beach, and I guess you can tell we loved to travel. We tried to travel so that I could take CME courses and travel at the same time. I am allergic to everything, but love horticulture, I almost professionally raised and bred birds especially finches, photography, (won some awards) interior and exterior design, charity work, did a lot of work on the lecture circuit in NY, but eventually we had to get out anticipating the housing crash, and the materialistic attitude in Nassau where our kids thought that if you went to school without $50 you were poor in 4th grade! So we moved to the big town of the time, Hendersonville, NC, all over the NY times ect. Its not a bad town, but the schools are like Katherine Schluter was cloned and male (or not) and all of the administrators are her. Including to parents. People are like sheep, and not involved i...Expand for more
n their kids educations, and when you ask the right questions, which would never be discouraged in NY, here its like you are a troublemaker. So here I am starting trouble. Unfortunately I fell 2 flights of escalators moving here, and now I am disabled. I have good insurance though thanks to Claire Bartley Russel's husband. I can walk and such again. I got another degree on line so I can try and practice in a related field and not lose the insurance. My sons in college. At least one of the reasons for moving here is that NC has just about the best Public College System in the Country, and Duke has a sliding scale fee system, and a great Talent Identifaction Program with distance learning, and summer courses. We are smack inbetween a 45 min commute to major cities, Greenville-Spartenberg, and Asheville, which is one of the centers selected to do "Green Reseach" and is growing fast. The housing is so cheap and taxes so low, its shocking. Well, compared to LI. ANYWHERE on LI. Right now I just want to help my daughter get through school meeting her potential, she has some physical probelms and dyslexia, like I did, but I did well, and she's brilliant. Our son is going to UNC-Asheville undergrad. Many choices for Gaduate work. Soon hope to be back doing something productive. Not sure if I want to be back in Medicine. It's such a hassle, and there are so many more enjoyable things to consider. I even would do craft work. lol My son can set up something on line for me to use to sell, or my collection of photos, framed. Who knows? Maybe interior design. LOL. When my husband was playing the venues in NY they called me the dancing doctor. I should call myself Dr. Design. LOL.
