George's Story

Roy Blount, Jr. once wrote, "Sometimes life is a funny ol' 'possum." Most of us may find some wisdom in that improbably mystic statement. I was a Methodist preacher in Virginia for 11 years before moving to Nashville in 1988. For seven years I edited children's curriculum for the United Methodist Publishing House--Sunday school, vacation Bible school, and other materials. In 1995 I was the model for a vacation Bible school unit called "Turnabout Paul" and was featured on every teacher book and craft kit, and a caricature of me appeared on the student pieces. There was also a promotional video, which my children will probably sell on eBay. These days I'm.... A variety of magazines and publications have included my freelance fiction and poetry...Expand for more
and nonfiction. Some musical publishing credits along the way. I still fool around with saxophone and piano and a variety of odd instruments, including the Armenian drum known as the dumbeg and the Armenian flute called the duduk. I am involved in helping people learn about the Armenian cultural history and the genocide. I've helped settle some refugees here. Most recently I've returned from my second trip to South Africa. Really cool: I went to an ordinary Methodist church one Sunday in Soweto and received an official welcome on behalf of the church from Winnie Mandela. Last year's travels included two weeks of study at Christ Church College, Oxford University and a week of work in Geneva, Switzerland. What else? Each day is a great gift!
