Bill's Story
While going to West, I worked at the Greenhill Movie Theater which showed only British films, mostly comedies and a few light, romantic ones. The films were pretty hilarious once you got used to the accent and their sense of humor...think Peter Sellers and Terry Thomas. My dad would drive me on Weds and Fridays after football practice, and I ate dinner in the car. Hey, $0.50/hr was big money then:) I usually took a bus on Sat night.
After leaving West, I studied engineering at Drexel Institute of Technology, now named Drexel University. During my Chemistry class at West, I noted a chapter on "Powder Metallurgy" in our text book. Though we didn't have to read that chapter, I liked the idea of working in the basic steel industry.
I chose Drexel because of its co-op program with half the time in school and half at work. The on-the-job training and financial benefits were great! I worked at the theater until the end of my freshman year at Drexel when it was time for my co-op job.
I had the choice of going to Baltimore to work at Armco Steel Company in the mill or in Research. Another metallurgical engineering major selected the mill, and I got my Research preference. I worked in Baltimore for 15 years developing/improving stainless steels for many applications. In 1977 the lab was closed and six of us transferred to the main research lab in Middletown, OH.

Baltimore. We had two boys and girl by 1982. While the move to Ohio was very difficult for her, the family thrived in the slower-paced Mid-West with its many friendly faces willing to help. The people at our Church were very supportive, and a few neighbors were from Baltimore which helped in the adjustment.
I continued moving up the technical ladder and developed a unique stainless steel that minimized the possibility of nuts and bolts sticking together (called galling) upon assembly. It also had other useful properties and was a big market success. I was fortunate enough to write technical articles, give conference presentations and visit potential customers to promote the alloy.
I retired in 2003 after 41 years (including 4 co-op years). Sadly, Barb had passed away in early 2001.after a short battle with a recurring medical issue. I still miss her, but God is good and sent me Gaylene who I wed in 2010. She also had three children-two boys and a girl like I had. On my side of the family, we have seven grandchildren, but unfortunately still none on Gaylene's side.
We enjoy traveling and sight seeing. Last year we took a two week tour of the National Parks of the West...beautiful! Of course, the grandchildren keep us hopping down to Kentucky where they live. Gaylene is very active with the local community theater both on and behind the stage. I prefer to enjoy the show from the audience side. The cast parties are fun also:)
