Charmaine's Story

12/03/08 Hello Everyone from the class of "70". Thirty eight years has gone by and we're still getting younger but wider, I mean wiser! It's been quite a life these past thirty eight years and a wonderful one for me. Single since "91" with three beautiful, college educated, well adjusted children who have been the core of my soul. I had a wonderful career as a Registered Nurse. Started out at Hershey Medical Center doing Open Heart Surgery in the late 80's which was the rush of my career. Decided to go into Administration as Assistant Director of Nursing for a Long Term Care Facility and became certified in Rehabilitation Nursing and set up programs to improve and maintain the highest standards that an individual could maintain. The program worked for the patients and you could see results but it didn't make any money so most of the programs I designed and implemented are no longer in existance. Sad but true. I became ill in 2000 with a benign brain tumor. Surgery and radiation for they couldn't remove all the tumor. It was a good time in my life as family and friends never left my side. Didn't have a boyfriend at the time. It was a good thing though for who would have wanted a bald woman with two black eyes who couldn't read or spell and walked with a limp. Needless to say, I recovered after three years and decided to go back to my first love, the OR and be a fish in the ocean and take care of one patient at a time. it was absolutely wonderful to be back at Hershey in the OR making new friends and receiving the self-satisfaction of knowing you w...Expand for more
ere making a difference in someone's life even if it was as simple as holding their hand before they fell asleep before undergoing their surgical procedure. What a rush it was until Sept. of 07. when I started to have some short term memory problems and no longer felt safe practicing in a high stress, multi-tasking environment. I couldn't afford to make a mistake that could cost someone their life so i went on disability and haven't worked for over a year. I miss it everyday so to fill the void in my life with no job and empty nest syndrome, I accepted my son's invitation to move to Florida, rented out my house in Hershey, and took off to be a Snowbird and enjoy my first grandson. Six weeks later, my son was promoted and transferred to Wisconsin. So much for being a Snowbird! Left the bikini behind and bought snowboots as we headed North. It's beautiful here and it feels like Pa. with all the beautiful mountains and valleys. Will be going back to Hershey over the x-mas holiday to be with my two daughters and to have a baby shower for my youngest daughter who is expecting a baby girl in March. So as you can see, I have been a very blessed woman and every day is a gift that is not to be taken for granted. Life is good and I look forward to being healthy and productive for many years to come. It's all aabout fun. If it's not fun, then I don't do it. Working as a nurse was fun, taking care of my precious grandson is fun, meeting new people and doing volunteer work is fun and life itself is just FUN. Many blessings to you all.
