Alicia's Story

Hi, MHS Alumni, Wow, it's been a while! Perhaps because the younger of my two children just graduated from high school, I'm feeling nostalgic for my own high school experience. Or maybe it's a combination of boredom, curiosity, or my impending empty nest syndrome, but here I am, and here is my life since high school in a nutshell (OK-maybe a very large Brazil nut shell): As some of you may remember, I graduated early-a decision I regret, and counseled my own kids not too repeat-senior year is too important to miss! I attended ESU (Enormous State University-aka SUNY Albany) for 4 years, where I lived in the dorms for 3 years and in an off-campus apt senior year. I wrote for the student paper and Lit Mag, was an RA, and a volunteer counselor/trainer for Middle Earth. I graduated Magna Cum Laude (it should have been Summa, but I met my future spouse in the fall of my senior year, and boy, did Senioritis set in) and Phi Beta Kappa, with a degree in Psychology with a second field in English. Not ready to leave the cushy world of academia yet, I went immediately to graduate school at SUNYA for a Master's in Social Work (MSW). However, one year into a 2-year program, I married my SUNY sweetheart, Jeff Fry, who was a ROTC grad, and an Army officer. We were stationed in Germany for 3 years, and traveled all over Europe, while I worked as Director of Youth Services, and was active in family support groups. From there, we returned to the US, and lived apart for 9 months while I finished my MSW at SUNYA, which I received in 1984. We were then stationed in Fort Knox, KY, then Ft. Benning, GA, while Jeff commanded tanks, and I worked as a Social Worker, ran family support groups and volunteered on post. Our son, James (Jimmy) was born in Ft. Knox in 1987. We came to Ft. Totten in Queens, NY in 1988, and had our daughter Katherine (Kat) in 1990. Jeff was Commander...Expand for more
of a recruiting unit, and I was Director of Army Community Service (ACS). Our marriage crumbled under the pressure, and we were divorced in 1998, but we remain good friends to this day. Jeff remarried and moved to Brooklyn, whereas I am still single (hint, hint) and have settled in Fresh Meadows, Queens. Both my children are smart and talented, and both were fortunate to attend Frank Sinatra School of the Arts (FSSA), which is a prestigious arts and academic high school here, as Drama majors. I became very active in the school system, serving on the School Leadership Team (SLT), the district councils, as PTA VP for 4 years, and as PTA President for the past 3 years. I was also Parent Advisor (my son, then later my daughter, were EIC) of the school's Lit Mag. As for my professional life, I left social work to try my hand in the corporate world for several years, but I am now back in my field as a Social Work Supervisor for SNAP, which is an agency that provides comprehensive social services to home-bound senior citizens (which I will be all too soon-eek!). My son Jimmy is a rising senior at Columbia University and a Smart Start Intern with JP Morgan Chase, and My daughter Kat has just graduated with honors from FSSA, is working in a fashion boutique for the summer, and will attend Marist College (whew, those private schools are pricey-thank goodness she got some scholarships) in August '08. I still write, and in fact have had a few articles, poems, and 1 short story published. Who knows, now that my baby is off to college, maybe I'll finally write the Great American Novel!. I also enjoy walking, cooking/baking, crafts, reading, swimming, travel, and volunteering. I would love to hear from my MHS classmates, and catch up with your news, so if this long narrative hasn't put you to sleep, please get in touch. With fond memories, Alicia Wiltsey Fry
