Fred's Story

After moving from Noblesville in 1960 and graduating from Silver Creek in 1962, I enlisted in the Air Force served as a Flight Line Controller in SAC in Missouri also USAFE in Europe, Africa; Middle East; Turkey; Greece including Libya before we were kicked out. Assigned to the 36th Tactical Fighter Wing and attached to NATO as a member on a special Recovery Team for F-105 aircraft. Whenever any of our aircraft landed at any NATO base that didn't have F-105 supply parts or equipment, our recovery team had to recover the aircraft. I served in the role as liaison between the NATO staff and our recovery team specialists, I learned French, German & Luxembourgish to fulfill the requirements for this duty. While in Europe I was stationed near the Battle of the Bulge area explored WW2 Bunkers and Battlefields, recovered Allied & Axis WW2 material and ammo near where "Band of Brothers" fought. Visited Paris many times also see the Stones in concert also London to see the Beatles in concert and other European capitals, experienced European lifestyles, see things written in history books, while some of my classmates had to deal with a certain nation in Asia. The only place I didn't get to visit before returning to the States was West Berlin and that was because of my security cleara...Expand for more
nce, other than that I was able to go all over Cold War Europe. After discharge, I used GI Bill to study computers before computers were cool. Worked eight years at KFC Corporate Headquarters in Louisville Ky for Colonel Sanders, before going to Dallas Texas to work for IBM as a Project Manager in IBM's Global Services Division. Total of thirty-six+ years managing functions, budgets and projects for IBM and Federal Government agencies Dept of Treasury, FDIC, FSLIC, Resolution Trust Corporation (Failed S&L's of late 80's & early 90's) and other firms, I enjoyed systems, programming & operations work more than dreaded management. Retired from IBM Global Services in 2002 to pursue retirement, sailing and scuba diving in the Bahamas and being a gentleman farmer in Texas. Although life has been good to me, I lost my wife in 2012 to a heart attack suffered after an operation to remove a cancerous kidney, we were together for more than twenty-six + years. We have two children and six grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren (everyone was stepchildren). I'm now traveling the road to my horizon but before arriving there I intend to pursue items I have on my bucket list some of which includes a return to Europe and Africa to visit the places that I worked when I was a young man.
