Donna's Story
Hello All, So much has happened since I last saw many of you, I really don't know how to begin. So I will begin with my journey of breast cancer. If any of you out there have cancer stories, I invite you to share them with me. I have found it is a great comfort to share with someone who has been where you have...
Anyway, in January of last year, I all of a sudden started losing weight. Because I was overweight at the time, it wasn't obvious that I had a rather large lump in my right breast. Within a couple of months, though it was. It took me till August of that year to get to a doctor-stupid, I know, but it was so scary(and truth to tell, it still is). ut after 3 months of waiting, and no answer, the situation was getting desperate, I could die waiting for the state of Mississippi to make a decision! Grr! A friend pointed out that I was a honorably discharged Veteran, so why not try the Veteran's Hospital in Jackson. I went there in early October, and on Halloween I had my radical mastectomy( this means they took the lymph nodes too). They have been taking great care of me ever since. I had two rounds of chemo, and now the doc says I'm in remission-but, they believe it has spread to my backbone. My doctor, which I saw just last week, says it looks like it's not going to get any worse, and they will continue to give me Zometa, a bone drug, through my port every two months. This is to prevent fractures.
I just wanted to add here, that I finally got my disability and Medicaid AFTER my surgery!
Well, my friends, that is pretty much my story for the last two years or so. Let me know how all of you are doing!
