Amy's Story

For those of you who do not remember, I am the tall one (6'2") who was the swimmer and always smelled like chlorine. Since leaving Fariview, I received two BA degrees from Ripon College. One in Biology (Marine and Pre-Med) and one in Anthropology. I also received a minor in German. After during my last year of school and after receiving invitations to join several different medical schools, I decided that I really did not want to be in debt until I was 35 and decided to enter the MS program in Telecommunications from the Engineering School at CU-Boulder. I always wanted to be a Vetrinarian when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were wrong. I am now an engineer who has decent grammar and spelling most of the time. I also became a corporate executive which is not something that was in the first life script. During my tenure at CU I did an internship with Harris Corporation and helped to design the infra-red wireless communications system that was to be tested on the "Challenger" Shuttle Mission. I got to know all of the individuals on that unfortunate flight personally and I took the explosion and their ultimate sacrifice for science and exploration very deeply. After graduation with my MS degree, I headed off to AEtna Life & Casualty to work in the telecom department. I worked on projects such as performing 1500 field office retrofits and moves. I also worked on the first LAN installations, first PC installations (whew I am dating myself) and two other projects that I am quite proud of. AEtna was the first company to use cellular technology for data transmission so that our claims adjusters no longer had to find a telephone booth to call into the Home Office to give quotes for auto claims. I also worked on the project to develop the first Castropy Teams in the US so that we would have a cellular modem, telephone, laptop, printer and stack of checks in kits that could be flown in to meet our agents at any catastropy that occurs. The first trial by fire was Hurricane Andrew. People were so amazed that an adjuster could show up at was once their house and have a check for food and living expenses 10 minutes later. While on the east coast with AEtna, I also became both a Staff Instructor and a Master Scuba Diver Trainer with PADI. Over the years I have certified over 2500 students in scuba diving. I have over 5,000 logged hours underwater without any pagers, cell phones or la...Expand for more
ptops, and have met some fantastic people over the years. I met my husband Rich thru scuba diving and he proposed 35 feet underwater in an old lead mine in Bonne Terre, MO. (This is a story best told over a cold one.) After leaving AEtna in 1991 I came back to my roots in Boulder and started my first of two consulting businesses. Both involved consulting in security and infrastructure design. My clients took me all over the world until 1999. In 1999 I took a year off and became the Dive Safety Officer at Colorado's Ocean Journey in Denver (now known as The Denver Aquarium). I was responsible for scheduling and keeping safe 178 volunteer divers that keep the exhibits clean and feed the animals. I got to know and love all of the eels, sharks, rays and other animals. They are much more intelligent than people give them credit for. In 1999 I also began consulting for the Company that my family now owns. My husband (since 1993) began working there in 1997 as the Director of Engineering and I joined him full-time at the end of 2000. It is really scary to have two engineers in the family. Working together every day has been fabulous. My family has been involved in Video Accessory Corporation for over 35 years. I am now the President/CEO of the Company and we are growing and developing new products all of the time. Since VAC is very involved with Homeland and National Security, I received my CMAS (Certified Master Anti-Terrorism Instructor) certification enabling me to teach counter-terrorism courses to first responders. I am also pursuing my MS in National Security with an emphasis in counter-terrorism and I am waiting to see if I have been accepted to the PhD. program in Homeland Security at the University of Colorado - Denver School of Public Affairs. Right now, I really enjoy my rose garden and doing counted-cross stitch patterns that I have designed from my own photography. I also enjoy producing HD videos using recordings that I have taken from my HD camcorder around Colorado and composing a musical score to go along with it. I have also developed many DVDs using video from all over the world that I have shot while diving with my husband. He does the underwater digital stills, and I shoot the underwatere video. Our best trip so far was filming the Humpback Whales off the Silver Banks. I love being back in Colorado and if any of you are in the area, I would really like to hear from you and catch up with what you are doing.
