Robert's Story
Hi. Allderdice & Roosevelt alum,
When I was playing a wonderful arrangement of the hymn "God of our Fathers" with the Concord Band, I couldn't help singing the words to Alma Mater ..to the amusement of my trumpet section cohort. still blowing my own horn("A" Orchestra. All-City, and baritone with the SigmaDeltaEpsilon "ballad- dears"---that's right, punning, yet, is my FORTE!)
I also play with the Lexington Bicentennial Band(Google lexbicband, you can hear us) where, on Tuesdays during July and August, my wife, Susan, can be found at the center of her picnic spread among our quasi-grandchildren(two of whom are shown in thephoto , nieces and nephews
listening to Sousa (her favorite) transcriptions of classical music, showtunes, etc.
Since Allderdice, I got my BA in Sociology from Brandeis, and married wife #1. I studied at the New School for Social Research while working for John Lindsay in Urban Renewal 'til I got drafted in'66. Spent most of my Army time at Ft.Devens, MA doing social work with returning NAM vets (and some time interviewing folks claimimg emotional reasons for not being drafted...some with legitimate bases). Returned to Brandeis, the Florence Heller School for Advanced Studies in Social Welfare where I became an MSW and ABD (left to continue my work in deinstitutionalization at the Walter E. Fernald School for the Mentally Retarded...real pioneering in l969-70.
Divorce ;and wife #2 . Move to Philadelphia
and several different jobs in gov't, private sector including a successful grant application and visit to the White House and Rosalynn Carter.
Jalma and I did a trial run at parenting with a deaf Dalmation whom we successfully taught sign language and sufficient behaviorial skills that we moved on to a son, Aaron, who is now 30, a Hampshire College grad and a JD from UMinn.LawSchool. He clerked 3rd Circuit US Court of Appeals with now Supreme Ct Justice Alito, and is now publicly defending offenders in Philadelphia and environs. (He's handsome, fit,but..his step-mom wants grandchildren.) Update 6/2010 Aaron's with lovely Bennington Writers School MFA/UPenn alum. . .no plans yet for marriage, let alone children, but they're a great couple! biked Phila/SanFrancisco summer 2011!
Aaron's step-mom: she's a trip! A UChicago grad, labor-journalist/photographer/writer of contemporary Jewish feminist midrash--of which Elie Wiesel is a personal fan and critique ! When she found out I played trumpet. she got the latest copy of the Boston Globe Calender, found opportunities for ensembles, and said: "If yo...Expand for more
u think you're going to harass me and the neighbors, you're nuts. AUDITION!" Since this was the first time in years I was free of 24/7 responsibilities, and blowing my own horn, regardless of the medium, is second nature, I acquiesced.
Susan's most recent accomplishment is a Masters' Degree from Hebrew College, granted for an historical-fiction novelette about King Herod Agrippa 1st now en-route to full-fledged novel-hood!. Between her and my son, I have an advanced degree in "qwelling"---that's Yiddish, if you're not familiar, there's some alum nearby who is!
I'm now retired from the Dept. of Mental Health in Massachusetts where I'd been working with and on the behalf of adult mentally ill persons, many with long and violent criminal histories, who constitute the revolving-door clientele representing the failure of the deinstuitionalization movement we so fervently hoped, in the 70's, would lead to a humane and thoughtful way of dealing with our fellow human beings .
This retirement was forced due to severe deterioration of my health, exacerbated by post-polio symptoms since '79 (I don't remember how many of you were co-sufferers in the '52 epidemic, we didn't talk about it) severe arthritis (happily, I had successful lower back surgery in May) and a toxic work environment. I had a good lawyer but lost my bid for disability retirement---not ready for a post-polio diagnosis and necessary adaptive equipment.
Update: 6/2010---recuperating from C1/C2 fusion; that's base of skull! Oi, vey!
My wife has endowed me with quite a collection of extended "family" and some wonderful relatives, as well. And I still have great family in Pittsburgh. Along with friends, an outstanding intellectual life centered on our Temple Beth El of the Sudbury Valley, where I, an atheist, ethno-gastric formerly adamantly unaffiliated Jew would encourage my wife to not be late for Torah Study (she goes to the one led by our cantor, ours has no leader, but it does have rules, and there are two others.); and a wide variety of political activities. re: human and social welfare issues.
I read excerpts from Isaiah 58, the haftorah, for morning service Yom Kippur(year 5770 by Jewish count)at shul. It admonishes ritual in favor of feeding the hungry and clothing the naked, etc!!!!
Enjoyed reuning with classmates at the strip in August; hope to see you again in 2016!
That's me in a nut shell, and, if Fred Bortz is reading this, he'd agree that there's no more appropriate conveyance for my description .
Thanks for your attention.
