Melissa 's Story

After graduating from P'ville, I moved to Oklahoma to go to college at Southwestern OK State University. I graduated there in '92 with a BS in Business Mgmt. I started working for a local restaurant, Pioneer Pies. I worked there for about 3 yrs. Unbeknownst to me, I hired the man I was going to marry as a waiter there. He was in the military and needed extra money to pay off some bills. I had always told my friends that I never wanted to get married or have kids. (Never say never!) We got married in 1995, and at that time I was in the process of trying to get in to Physical Therapy school at OU. I had decided that was my "true calling". So I was working part time and taking the prerequisites to get in. I applied in 1997, but didn't make the final cut. Disappointed, we decided to begin our family. We had our first child, Trent, in 1998. At that point, Jim's job at Tinker AFB was phased out, and he got a transfer to Keesler AFB, in Biloxi, MS. We had two more sons while we were stationed at Keesler, Josh in 2000 and Levi in 2003. We were there from 1998 to 2003, when Jim retired from the Air Force. We moved at the right time, Hurricane Ivan hit the next summer, and Katrina was the following year. We went back to see what was left after Katrina, not much more than trash. After Jim retired, we moved back to Oklahoma City, and began working for the Vineyard church. We had maintained contact with our pastors from that church, Charles and Dianna Bello. Jim was the Associate pastor and I was the church secretary....Expand for more
I learned a lot in that job, about church accounting and about faith. It took a lot faith to keep the books. I would stress out when we seemed really short on finances, but God always came through. In 2005, I found out I was pregnant again. I was 35, and always said I would be done at 35. I had our last son in 2006, about two months after my 36th birthday. Daniel is now 2 yrs old going on 5 or 6. He has no doubt he can do anything his brothers can do, but better. Jim and I decided that maybe I should try PT school again. I was a bit skeptical, because I was sure that they wouldn't take credits that were over 10 yrs old, much less 17 yrs old. I was surprised to find that yes, they would take them and I only had 1 class to take to apply, cadaver anatomy. I enrolled, took the class, and made an A. I reapplied for PT school at OU health sciences center in OKC. I was selected as an alternate, but then they suggested I try Occupational Therapy. I wasn't sure since I had PT in my heart all this time. But I did switch, and I am currently in my 2nd of 3 yr program for a Master in Occupational Therapy. I realize now, that's it's a better fit for me that PT really is. It's about finding practical solutions to help people to do the things they need to do on a daily basis. It's much more flexible in some ways than PT, and I like the creativity that is encouraged for helping people in different ways for different problems. That's where I am now. I wish I could have made it to the 20 yr reunion, but there's always the 30yr.
