Debra's Story

When I graduated from ACHS I went straight to State Beauty College in Campbellsville, Ky. I got my licenses as a Cosmetologist June 1978 and 3 months later my husband and I got married Aug 6th, 1978. We lacked 4 weeks being engaged a year at the time we got married. I went to work in a Hair Salon in Greensburg and worked until Jan- 1979 where I took over managment of Adair Beauty Salon in Columbia there. I went back to Cosmetology school March 1981 to be a Cosmetologist Instructor and graduated from that Nov, 1981 3 months after I gave birth to my first born child- Charles who is now 27 years old. I was the youngest Cosmetologist instructor to pass the state board exam on the first attempt. I worked there for several years and then got out and did several others odds and ends jobs where I was burnt out on the the industry at that time. I got back in the Cosmetology field not long after my 2nd child Kimiko was born- she is 20 years old and engaged and with 2 1/2 years more college before getting married- both will be double majors and she will be a five years college major due to the majors she chose. I went back to the salon and just worked for others until managment opened up again in 1993. I brough my own salon in 1997 and in 1998 I traveled back and forth to Carole Lynden Academny and got my doctorate in Cosmetologist which is a P.H.D. It was a series and courses of 4 different phrases and training that was completed in weekends clusters of classes an time to come back home and practice and accomplish that phrase before going to the next training. I learned how to cut curl into the hair and how to use...Expand for more
scissors and razors like curling irons to not only cut curl into the hair but to cut a style into the hair that you could wash, blow dry and go and it looked like you had spent hours and hours rolling and styling it. After 24 years total of doing hair - I got allergic to the chemicals and had to change occupations. It was a hard adjustments and took me several years to fine another positon I felt good about. I work for the State of Ky as an adminstrative secretary with the Community Based Service Cabinet. I work in a regional office primaryily handling timesheets/ payroll for our region and the procurement of our supplies adminstrator for one side of our region of 18 counties. My part of the region for the procurement is 10 counites strong. In the years between the Hair Salon and where I am now I had to have a change of life baby to just aid in the adjustments of life choices. Robert is now 6 years old and just recently joined cub scouts. I also assist my brother with his houseboat moving company My brothr graduated from ACHS 1980 My husband and I are still going with our marriage of 30 years . I love him more today than I ever dreamed possible. Our marriage is based on God's value of a marriage and we have used his instructions as to each of our own roles accordingly is the secret our marriage next to good communciations. Everytime we have had any trouble is generally due to one of us shutting the other out. In case some of my classmates remember my Senior Prom date well he is my husband now and I'm proud of that fact. In case your interested he was a blind date that was set up for the fun of it .
