Wendy's Story

Hi Winslow!! Class o' '74 and all you others! I wonder if someone is planning a 35th reunion?? Can it really be almost that long since we were running WHS halls and athletic fields? So, if you looked at the photos already you know I have three children, grown to adulthood (phew) and even once was married to their father, Butch (Ora) Haskell. Things 'didn't work out' but we have remained very much a family in as many respects as we could. The kids are very much thier own persons but if you knew Butch or me back in the day...you'd find our children are the best distillation of their parents. For me, everything I've ever done pales in comparison to the sheer joy (and it wasn't all rosy) I have known as a mother. So, after WHS I attended 3 years at St. Mary's School of Nursing in Lewiston, ME. Got my diploma in nursing, RN, worked several years at the old Seton Hospital in Pediatrics, moved to Boston to work at Children's Hospital in critical care. EYES WIDE OPEN kind of nursing! Moved back to Maine, hired by ICU at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, Butch and I started our family. When the kids were small, (3,5 and 8) I defected with them. Butch remained very actively involved in their lives but I found it impossible to stay married. I'm sure some of you know personally how difficult this decision was for me. I was unemployed for the only 4 months of my life since I was 11 years old and babysat half of Winslow. Next job: MMC in Portland. Worked in cardiac care then moved to the ED, which is where I currently work every weekend. For two years I've also worked for MaineHealth Clinical Integration in the AMI, acute MI, program as database coordinatior, outreaching to hospitals in central and southern Maine to improve care for heart attack patients. I now have the best of both worlds. Enough clinical time in the state's only Level I ED to know what it feels like to have my hair on fire once in a while as well as a really interesting desk job during the week. After nearly 32 years in the biz, I still adore wh...Expand for more
at I do. Nursing was a perfect pick for me. Too bad there won't be enough nurses in the world to care for us when we get old (NOT happenin' to me, eh?) and need 'em. This story is pretty boring so far....probably will end on a boring note, too. I drive a Jeep some days, ride a Kawasaki Vulcan whenever/wherever I can. Still enjoy sports/working out. I hike/backpack and am in fact, packing to hike to Chimney Pond next week. I always overpack. You just never know when you might need.....whatever. I ride a bicycle with a rack on the back and sometimes get my groceries that way. Yep, it's scary but true. I haven't started picking up bottles and cans yet but when I retire....maybe. I play ice hockey twice a week for the Maine Cooncats, part of the Greater Portland Women's Ice Hockey League, have for the last 10 years. LOVE it. Wish we'd had it at WHS when I had teenaged legs and lungs. My friend dubbed me 'Wendy Gretsky' so I naturally (and because #33 was taken) have #99 on my jerseys. I still downhill ski, though it took me longer than most to give up my long straight skiis. I have had two wonderful women companions in the years since my failed marriage and am now single by choice. (I'm quite sure that last statement caused you palpitations and shortness of breath and for that and any other discomfort you may feel, I am truly sorry but get over it). I hope to be selling my two homes next year and building a new one. I have one parent left, Dad is still living on Cushman Road on Winslow and I go there usually once a week to check in, cook, take him out for rides. We have lots of laughs and try not to fixate on any of his aged problems. He taught me courage as a child and continues to demonstrate it as an old man. My dear mom died in 2003 and I miss her every day. So, you have it, really. Still alive and kicking and laughing whenever I can. I hope you are well, have spent your days since high school working for the greater good in some capacity and that we can meet again someday. Peace and Love, Wendy
