I signed up With the US Army in January 1979 on their delayed entry program which basically meant that when I graduated from High School I would be on the Air plane headed for Ft. Leonard Wood ,MO for basic training. They did give me a couple of days to spend with my family and friends to say my good byes. Then family took the airport in Rapid city. If any of you have seen the movies about basic training well they lie, it's harder then what they are showing you. After basic training Every one needs to know how to be a soldier and how to know how to handle guns and know which officer is which. I was sent to Ft. Lee,VA for Food Service Training, I love to cook and I didn't know how to cook a turkey in a tent in the field, but I do now.Then after that training I went to temporary duty to Ft. Gordan, GA, they needed more food service people to cook for the soldiers that were doing their training. After their training then we were all sent to our permanent duty station.
