Darrell's Story

There is a saying about missile systems that is sometimes analagous to people. "All velocity and no direction". Its when you run like hell and have no idea where you're going. That was me after high school. By the time the fog lifted many of my bridges were in ashes. I married a wonderful woman, joined the Air Force, and left to see the world. We had two beautiful sons that helped me fight dragons and rescue damsels in distress at castles and dungeons across most of Europe and Scandinavia. It was great! After the military I went to work with the Electronics Integration Division of Northrop-Grumman Aerospace. I was able to work with some of the best airborne weapons systems in the world. It was all hush-hush; cloak and dagger stuff. I loved it. About ten years ago I left NG for a manufacturing manager position with Frito Lay and I'm still there. Brenda finished her degree and built a great career with USDA. Then about 6 yrs ago her family was devistated with health problems and she left her job. She has been amazing in her support for them. I still love to "tinker". I oversee alot of robotics and optical sensory-dependent manufacturing functions. We are the most technologically advanced mega-site facility in the world. But what I really enjoy is restoring a 1969 Camaro SS/RS 396 with my sons, Zachary and Adam. Its an original big block with hide-away lights, cowl induction (and all of that cool teenage boy stuff). We also put a 27hp Kawasaki lawnmower engine and a constant-velocity transmission (out of an Ez-Go golf cart)into a 1978 MG Midget convertible th...Expand for more
at gets 64 MPG (so far)- still doesn't have a heater. My boys are awesome. I will post some pictures. Not really sure why I'm going on and on - maybe its good therapy - I'm sure I need therapy. I never see anyone I went to school with. I told the boys about when the grammar schools loaded us onto buses and took us to the county fair at the Independent #2 warehouse on the old "coochee" road. Seems like all I took with me was a dollar maybe a dollar and a half. I tell them about moving irrigation pipe and sand lugs and unstringing tobacco and working all summer to buy clothes for school. I didn't tell them about (skipping school to seine someone's pond- sometimes at random); sneaking in the back door at Bull's pool hall with Ricky and Donnie; the sheriff picking me and Freddy up on trick-or-treat night when we were 14, hitch-hiking to Hilton Head with Daryl; diving into the oil-pit at the old "Chevrolet Place" when the cops were chasing us - then throwing away my clothes and crawling back through my bedroom window; being at the Dairy Queen at 3am on Saturday night and there's no place to park; meeting at Pig's house to watch SNL and play 3-card gut until dawn; or the 3-day music feastival at Charlotte Speedway. We don't talk about hay rides to the fair; walking in the rain; sitting by a light pole on sunny days; the Lettermen; black-eyed Susans - it just doesn't come up. Remember when every car on "the hill" would be considered a muscle car today -or a Barrett-Jackson Classic? I've rambled for much longer than I intended. Hope all of you are well. Drop me a line.
