Frank's Story

In 1970, the year I graduated, I was still working with the band Radar, which at the time consisted of, among others, Sandy Springs alumni Tony Garstin, Jimmy Cobb, and Chris Cornish. I was on a kind of quest, the depth of which I did not understand. I was eighteen and liked it. I was not interested in growing up. But life is change, so I faced difficult conflicts. I had become too dependent on my friends, all of whom were changing--growing up, despite themselves. Meanwhile, I continued to isolate myself, to hide and avoid, and my insistence on maintaining my abuse of illicit substances made the struggle I had always had with negative emotions, especially depression, that much worse. I felt and was lost inside, and becoming increasingly hopeless, helpless and miserable. And, I knew that I did not have God on my side, because I knew I had not done what is required for that. Though He was calling, yet I resisted Him. He wanted me enough to cause my circumstances to become desperate enough for me to want Him; rather, I already wanted Him, but I didn't want to have to choose. He caused me to be away for a while, in an environment which He was able to use to draw me to Him. I can see now that He had created that environment for me for that purpose. Many of the people I met there apparently served only to direct my path. On a daily basis, God became more and more real, and His will more and more obvious. Gradually, I allowed myself to consider accepting Him. At one lonely point of desperation, I knelt and prayed and told God that if He would get me out of the situation I was in I would do whatever He said. After my return home, He continued to direct me until something which He had shown me month...Expand for more
s earlier was to happen began to happen. He had shown me that I would meet a certain Individual at a certain Location, and that that individual would tell me what He wanted me to do. I was in a car with two of my oldest friends. The driver said, "So, where to?". "How about Chastain?", the other replied, referring to the park where we all used to gather. The park was the Location. "Did you hear about Bradley?", the other asked. "You mean that Jesus Freak?", the driver answered. Bradley was the Individual. At the park we parked the car, and directly in front of the car Bradley stood talking to the driver's girlfriend; a fact impelling the driver to immediately exit the vehicle. Bradley noticed this, and, seeming to notice me, left the driver's girlfriend to come over to talk. I realized that what God had shown me was coming to pass, that He was going to tell me what He wanted me to do. I rolled down the window. "Are you out now?", Bradley asked. "Yeah". "For good?". "Yeah". "Praise God!", he said. His face was actually glowing. Bradley and I got together shortly afterward, he told me about Jesus Christ, and I finally accepted God's will and plan for my life. Since then, I have had successes and failures, but Jesus has never failed. He has always been there, and still is. I am learning about His love and acceptance, of me as well as of others, and so am learning to love as He does. And I am learning to live by faith in Him, which puts depression and other negative feelings and thoughts in their place. Bradley and I remain the best of friends, have had many grand adventures, have shared life. We are brothers. I continue to pray for all of my high school buddies, so they can be my brothers, too.
