James's Story

After 30 some odd years of travelling around the country doing anything from designing and installing UPS sytems to fusion splicing fiber optic connectors I've finally settled down to what I hope will be my last full time job. Its in San Antonio and it means I can actually "live" in Comfort and make the daily commute back and forth. Its as an IT Manager and while its a bit stressful its also for a smaller firm where the attitude is more laid back then hard pressed, so its not so bad. The travelling life was good for a while and I got to see a lot of this country...like the song says...from sea to shining sea...from Anacortes, WA and Longbeach, CA to Boston, MA and NYC, NY with Mexico thrown in for good measure but its good to be permanently back "at home" in the Hill country. Somewhere during that time I managed to get married and have two kids....a son who's now 26 and a daughter who's 23. They both live in Comfort so we get to see a bunch of each other these days. The marriage ended in divorce but the kid's mom and I are still good friends...and why not....she still lives in Comfort too. That's not to say I'm free and easy, ladies....I have since become encumbered with full-time female companionship....so I'm more then spoken for. Oh wait....this isn't an on-line dating profile, is it? Anyway...life is good these days despite the economic turmoil. I work part-time with my "other half" as a backhoe operator ( yeah, yeah...go figure)....but hey.....she owns the backhoe and how many of you guys don't secretly want a...Expand for more
woman who owns her own backhoe? hehehe.....I spend just about all my spare time restoring old military jeeps. Bottom line is....I stay busy doing what I like whenever I like.....right, dear? hehehe...... Well, it seems the high cost of living in the Hill Country has finally come to an end. Since June 2011 I am now a permenamt resident of Seguin, TX in Guadalupe County. You oughta see this place....they actually have soil...aka dirt....for what we used to refer to as "the ground" in the Hill Country. You can actually plant things without dynamite....and they'll grow. No more....or at least a lot less frequent....early and/or late freezes. Still on the Guadalupe River.....and within easy striking distance of the ranch in Doss......same basic commute to San Antonio.....only with less traffic and congeston. And besides......the reward of finally living in my very own house goes a long way toward making everything perfect. Just when I figured life was as good as it was ever gonna get, it got better! We've moved out into the country and live on a small 54 acre farm. There's deer and turkey and squirrels, feral hogs foxes and bobcats, etc, etc, etc. And with a really wide porch covered with rocking chairs I get to watch them all. Whenever I get bored with all this I now have a Woodmizer sawmill and love spending time slabbing out oak, pecan, walnut, cherry, elm, mesquite, hickory, cedar and cypress and lots more. Look me up, come on by and we'll sit on the porch with a cup of coffee and jaw about the good old days.
