Debbie's Story

I did not actually graduate from PHS. My family moved to West Point, Miss. in Jan. of my sophomore year. I graduated from West Point High School in May, 1970. However, I keep up with my Parkin friends. I went to the local community college right out of high school and married Kenny Hinshaw in May, 1971. I worked at Miss. State Univ. and was a part-time student while Kenny finished college. We moved to Alabama with his job in Jan. 1974, and had our first daughter, Katye, that Sept. Kenny's job with Gold-Kist, an agricultural company, kept us on the move in Alabama. We had 3 daughters in 3 different locations. Katye in Ft. Payne in Sept. '74; Anne in Selma in '77; and Rebecca in Tuscaloosa in '79. When we moved 20 miles from Tuscaloosa, I saw that as a chance to complete my degree, so I did in Dec. '79 with a degree in Elementary Education. I taught one year in Greensboro, Alabama. At that point we felt we wanted to get back to Mississippi (actually Kenny was transferred to Aliceville, Ala. and we did not want to move there). So on blind faith, we both quit our jobs (yes, I know we had 3 little girls) and moved back to West Point in Feb. 1981. I substituted the rest of that year and Kenny got a job at a local farmers supply store. The following fall, I got a job teaching 8th grade. I was scared to death but ended up loving those older kids. I got my Master's in counseling in Aug. 1990 and immediately got a position as vocational counselor at our local high school vocational center. After 5 years I got the job as high school counselor and was there until 2005 when my baby brother, Tim, got the job as the high school principal, so I had to go to another school. The kindergarten school had an opening and that's where I've been for the last 3 school years. Kenny finally ended up as a lab technician at the cement plant in Artesia and retired from their 2 1/2 years ago so that he could farm full time. We have 140 acres ...Expand for more
of pasture at our house and then we have 500 acres of pasture about 4 miles north of us. We just raise feeder steers. Katye and Anne both graduated with business degrees from Miss. State and Rebecca has an elementary education degree from Miss. Univ. for Women and a Master's degree in counseling from Miss. State. Katye and her husband live in Jackson, MS. and have a 3 yr. old daughter, Maggie. Katye works part time for an insurance firm. Anne and her husband live in Dixon, IL. Anne is a Human Res. Mgr. at a local hospital and she has one son, Jacob, who is 5. Rebecca is married to an Air Force pilot and they have just moved to San Antonio, TX. They have two children, Luke (2 1/2) and Jane (1 yr.). Rebecca's family lived in England for 2 1/2 so I was able to make 3 trips to England while they were there. Twice to help with new babies and once Kenny and I went for fun. I hope to retire after one more (maybe two) more years. The grandchildren keep us busy and I would love to be able to go at will. We love Miss. State basketball and go to almost all the home games. We are members of the First United Methodist church and I sing in the choir there. I love to cook and work in the yard. I have fond memories of Parkin. We had a big family and were poor but we didn't know it back then. I had some really good teachers there who instilled the desire to continue my education after high school. I also was fortunate to get to work with some very nice people at the 5 & 10 (was it the Ristey's) and also Harris' Dept. Store. Those jobs meant a lot to a poor, little farm girl; along with all the people who let me babysit for them. I feel like I have worked nearly all my life but I don't regret it a bit. If anything it taught me that no matter what the job, if it is honest, it is honorable. I love keeping in touch with my Arkansas friends. You all have touched my life in some way and it brightens my day when I hear from one of you.
