Donald's Story
I became plain old Don when I joined the Navy in 1974. I served for 13 years, of which I had the good fortune to spend 10 in Europe. My last three years were in Boston and I moved to the Bangor, Maine area in 1988 when I left the Navy. I lived in Maine until 2003 when we moved to Madisonville, Ky., following the death of my father here. While in Maine I worked at a number of newspapers including the Bangor Daily News. I also did some radio work at Stephen King's radio station - WZON. I have a daughter, Caroline (we call her "Coco") who is 30. She's a bank manager in Boston. e a 15-year-old daughter who is a freshman in high school. I am the lead reporter at The Messenger, a daily newspaper here in Madisonville. Some of you may remember Mike Phillips and I were good friends. Our friendship has lasted through the years. He is in Memphis. We talk often on the phone and we meet in Knoxville a couple of times a year for UT football games. We are meeting, along with a couple of my Navy buddies, on April 17 to attend the spring game. Mostly, it's a good weekend of sitting in the hotel bar and talking about old times. I would enjoy hearing from you. South Pittsburg was the center of the universe at one point in our lives. I remember it fondly - well, most of it.
