Gregory's Story

I am a semi-retired teacher - 32 years of teaching science, most of my career was at Meridian Elementary School - 26 years in a middle school without windows. The last year, 2005-2006, I was transferred to the High School to teach Earth Science, Physical Science, Chemistry, and Biology. For the first time in 26 years, I had a room with windows - spent first three days of classes just sort of staring.... Anyway, I enjoyed that last year which was prolonged when Blago played with my retirement date - Momma had a September baby - you could retire if your birthday preceded 1 July! Anyway, it was fun as my student teacher who succeeded me was a big help and I needed time to work on my diabetes II. I was finally able to retire. Last July, the District called me and asked me to teach 3 hours a day and I agreed to the situation. Chemistry and Biology - it was a good year! But I traded the Biology Class for Earth Science and I am excited - I have always love the subject of Astronomy and Fossils - so next year is going to be an even bigger year. Needless to say, I have always liked Metropolis but would not want to work in the system there because of the local politics. My father sold me 15 acres on the "farm" and I have my home, my wife, and two sons located here with me. As any Science teacher would report, the world's largest human parasite is a "teenager". And now my sons, John (22) and Joe (18) are still here - John is working and saving some dollars for undergraduate school and Joe is going to Shawnee Community College. To keep myself busy does not require much effort. I am a Commander of the local Civil Air Patrol unit. I am a trusteed for two cemeteries - Chosen Friends and the IOOF Cemetery. When time avails itself, I am still practicing to be a trumpet player and make appearances with the Shawnee Community College Band. Last fall, I was asked to play in the orchestra pit for the productio...Expand for more
n, "Wizard of Oz". I learned so much about music performance and for all the years that I watched the movie and heard the music - you just would not know what intricate details are used to make the production work. I still have my sights set on becoming a "professional player" and everytime the circus comes through town I contemplate jumping aboard. I may even try to get a job on a cruise ship - but I get wary when someone mentions the "viruses" that attack the inhabitants.... My wife, Lee Ann, of 30 years has told me that she has found a lawyer who says that SHE gets everything in the divorce - so I am rattled completely. We are now planning to buy a larger home next year, Summer 2010, and are planning a large deck and concrete areas to host family and friend events. Our current home is just too small with four adults - no way to entertain. Hopefully we will be able to enjoy ourselves even more. The wife plans to retire in three years and could NOT cope with me sitting around retired so she encouraged me to find a job. Next fall, my classes will end around 11:00 AM and then I will travel to SCC for music practice. Joe plays baritone and is not looking forward to my participation, but we did play in the spring concert together. This summer, I am planning trips to Tennessee and Chicago (which is also as big as Tennessee) to see relatives. I must find time between the mowing to make the trips - may even run into Tunica to make an investment or two!! If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have coffee, creamer, and sweetner to be able to deal with the day-to-day. If I won $100 million, I'd give 50% of it to charities, then spend the rest on travel, study the heavens and see the world. My first job was at delivering newspapers, where I got paid $5.00/week to get up at 4 AM for the North Avenue paper route. What I remember most about it is really early and eerie to ride by the cemeteries.
