Jay's Story

This was written October, 2009. The short version: While I went to college and finally majored in anthropology and ancient history (This was long before Indiana Jones made anthropology and archaeology cool.), I married Ben Kail and we had two wonderful and beautiful daughters. (They did NOT take after me.) Since my desire to raise my girls and be with my husband became stronger than digging around in the dirt, plus a car wreck and a few other technical difficulties: I did not really get into that field and I did not want to teach. But I have never lost interest; although my problem is I have had too many interests. While living in Arkansas and before my girls were born, I worked for the NEP (National Education Program - a cold-war anti-communism organization. I know, the name is misleading. No longer exists, I am sure as its time has long passed.) After my oldest daughter, Lisa, was born I was personal secretary to Dr. Betty Caldwell, a child psychologist and editor of "Child Development". a quarterly which published researches in the child development field. Dr. Caldwell was an amazing person. (My room-mate from college called me and told me she had to read those quarterlies for her masters which was in child development.) When Shawna was born, I gave up my job with Dr. Caldwell and became a stay-at-home mom and picked up my painting. The painting I have done off and on through the years and have won a few awards, bla, bla bla. My girls started school in Garland, Texas and we moved to Tomball, Texas when Lisa was in the fifth grade. Both girls graduated from Tomball High. Tomball is just outside Houston. Ben and I moved...Expand for more
to Victoria, Texas as soon as Shawna left for college. My longest employment was with Victoria County Adult Probation. I was senior clerk (finally) over a 5-county area. I was good at detail work but did not like training other clerks. (Actually, I think I should have been a librarian.) Retired while in Victoria and Ben decided to retire also when a place came up for sale near Abilene that Ben really liked (located on the Clear Fork of the Brazos River). Lisa, our daughter, and her family already had moved to Abilene when Lawrence's work took him there; so I was happy to go too. Ben and I have been here for 5 years now. Sadly, before we left Victoria, Ben was diagnosed with Parkinsons. Ben had always been a good bond trader and than investment advisor. But it is stressful work, and stress makes Parkinsons worse. He is enjoying living here near Lake Fort Phantom and on the Clear Fork. He is now planning what he says will be his last elk hunt in Colorado. (He leaves in a week.) But he has said that the last three years. He is excited about taking his grandson with him this time. I, on the other hand, am somewhat apprehensive. Sorry, not so interesting. But like everyone I guess, the really exciting or interesting events one can't talk about or doesn't want to talk about. This was the short version?! I hope my friends remember me as a very nice person. I am afraid those who did not know me well may think I was a snob. But actually that was because I was very shy and lacked self-confidence. I just didn't now what to say MANY times. I seem to "grow out of that" my first semester in college, for survival I suppose.
