George's Story

George Phillip Oliver (Born 16 Aug 1939) I was born in Bells on my grandparents¿ farm. My life until the age of 18 was spent on the farm or around the local area. I attended Bells High School from the first through the twelfth grade and have many fond memories of my classmates and teachers. I am probably best remembered as the mischievous boy who was sent to the principles office 36 times my senior year. Most of the time it was for things I did; however, I did get the blame for some things I didn¿t do (Like the skunk in the locker). After graduation from HS I soon realized that finding a good job required that you needed to ¿fulfill your military obligation¿ and have some marketable skill. As I had already declined to go to college and had no significant skills, the only choose left was to join the military. In October of 1957 I joined the US Air Force where I remained for 44 years (26 years active and 18 years as a federal employee). Most of my career was spent in the logistics field in many different jobs and at various command levels. Because of some of these jobs/levels, I was lucky enough not to see combat or go into a combat zone. My last 8 years of federal service was as the Military Test Control Officer at RAF Lakenheath, UK. I have had the opportunity to see 47 of the 5...Expand for more
0 states as well as service in many foreign countries. Service locations: Lackland AFB, TX(Oct 57-Feb 58): FE Warren AFB, WY (Feb 58-Mar 58); RAF Bentwaters, UK (Mar 58-Mar 62); Amarillo AFB, TX (Mar 62-Mar 64); RAF Bentwaters, UK (Mar 64-Mar 68); Malmstrom AFB, MO (Mar 68-Jan 70); Wakani AS, Japan (Feb 70-Feb72); Minot AFB, ND (Feb 72- Feb 73); Anderson AFB, Guam (Feb 73-Feb 75): Tinker AFB, OK (Feb 75-Feb76); Ramstein AFB, Germany (Feb 76-Feb 78); RAF Bentwaters, UK (Feb 78-Sep 93); RAF Lakenheath, UK (Sep 93-Aug 2001). Temporary Duty took me to various parts of Turkey, Spain, France, Belgium, Italy, Taiwan, Okinawa, Canada and the USA. It was during my first foreign duty assignment that I met my wife Sandra Ann Oliver nee Musgrove. We were married on 12 Mar 1960 and spent almost 43 years of happily married life together. Our two children Lisa Jane and Mark Wayne are still my pride and joy as they were to her. Sandra died of cancer on 11 Nov 2002. I had retired from work in Aug 2001 so that we could spend more time together and possibly travel some. It was the same month that the doctors discovered Sandy had terminal cancer. I couldn¿t see living in England without Sandra so I returned to the USA in March of 2004 and decided to settle for a while in Georgia. That is where I am now.
