Karen's Story
My family left Calif. after my sophomore year at M.K. and moved to Pinetop, a small town in N. Arizona. I attended McNary H.S. and after my junior year, my family moved AGAIN, to Phoenix, Az. My dad was working on becoming a teacher with the U.S. Gov't. hence the moves. I attended Sunnyslope H.S. and graduated in l960. I worked and went to school and then decided to marry Carl, who I had met at Sunnyslope Carl Tharp is/was his name, he decided to take his real father's name: Roye... We had 5 children and when my youngest was 5, I decided to go to work, and with great luck, was hired by the Indian Health Service, which is part of the Dept. Of Health and Human Services. them. I'm Native American, but was not raised in the "Indian way", however, during my 20 plus years there I learned a lot about the different Native American Tribes and their way of living. Met some wonderful people and enjoyed my job. I worked primarily in the Office of Human Resources. I retired in 1995 when Pres. Clinton was downsizing the Government. I planned to travel with my husband and his job and did so for 3 years, traveling to Calif., Nevada, Oregon and Washington State. Unfortunately, in 1998 my mother became ill and I cared for her until her death in 2005. Now my husband and I are both retired and living in Prescott Valley, Arizona, doing "our thing" with our dogs and 17 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
