Janet's Story

I entered Turkeyfoot in Jan '63, graduating in May'64 and wish there had been more time to get to know people. After graduation, I worked briefly in DC and then for the Prosecuting Attorney of this county until my first child was born. I was a stay-at-home Mom until my youngest child was in 6th grade and enjoyed every moment of home, church, school and community work I was involved in. I also spent 10 years as an EMT with our local volunteer ambulance service. When I returned to the workforce, I spent six years as Admn. Asst./Asst. Treas. in our local school and then accepted a position with a railcar repair company. It was the perfect job for the next 15 years. When my boss retired, the corp office and my job moved to Chicago and I accepted another position with the same company, but in the plant office. Bad move! Personnel in these offices did not have the same ethics and standards we had followed in the corp office. As office manager I was asked to get the offices up to standards, but then found I didn't have the full support of the plant manager. I elected to retire early and get a Bichon Frise puppy! Good groomers are rare, so I learned to groom my Bichon. This led to grooming school and opening a shop of my own. The business was more successful than I ever anticipated. I had to suspend my business recently due to a personal matter. I miss my hairy little friends very much, but decided to take advantage of the free time I would have and purchased a longarm quilting macine so I can finish all the quilts I want to make. My husband accepted an early buy-out and retired four years ago. He now drives a bus for our local school and enjoys it! We are still trying to a...Expand for more
djust to his retirement - warning to any of the ladies who hasn't tried this yet, these men upset your routine and invade your territory!!! We have three children and four grandchildren. Our younger son is currently on deployment, he's a Lt. and preparing to be Lt. Com. in the US Navy. He lives in Stafford VA when he's not on deployment. Our daughter, a RN-ADN for 20 years, returned to college while working full-time, with two teen-age sons and a great husband, and will graduate Dec '10 with her BSN. She has been accepted into the nurse practitioner program at Kent State and will begin Jan '11. Our older son is caught in that will I have a job or not trap that so many face (his job being moved south). Our oldest grandson is driving!! And his cousin, our only granddaughter will be getting her permit this month!! They will both graduate hs in two years - say it ain't so! I returned to gardening after retiring and can and freeze for our needs as well as our daughter's family. I have to say I like knowing where my food was grown and that it isn't loaded with chemicals and preservatives and unlike the USDA, I don't want ANY bugs in it!! We took quite a few vacations with my sisters and their husbands, we have traveled to see Jack at his different postings and I enjoyed many trips to NYC with my sister for a couple days of shows and sightseeing. We also flew to Grand Cayman when Jack was married - beautiful ceremony by the water with just their parents there. It was our 2nd trip to Grand Cayman and it's no longer the paradise it was - too many hotels/condos and to much party attitude now. So, that's what I've done with all these years. Nothing real exciting. How about you?
