Kelly's Story

After graduation from QHS, I attended Seattle Pacific University, graduating with a degree in Education/Christian Education. I worked with inner city kids on Capitol Hill in Seattle, which was a real stretch for a farm girl! But I enjoyed it and planned to continue in that area after graduation. However, God had other plans! I met my now-husband, Wes, my senior year; not only was he tons of fun and very interesting (a pilot, scuba-diver, skier, world traveler), he also had grown up in a small town (Hartline, WA - can you get any smaller?)and lived on a wheat farm! We got married Oct. 8, 1983, one year to the day of our 1st date, and will celebrate our 26th anniversary this year! Wes and I lived in Lynnwood, WA our first year, where he learned the carpet/floor installation business with his best friend and I taught kindergarten at Heritage Christian school in Bothell, while finishing my Ed. degree. We are still a little surprised that we decided to return to the farm so quickly, as we both enjoyed the city and all our friends on the west side; however, it seemed right to go, and we are thankful we did, as Wes was able to farm with his dad for only 8 short years before he died from cancer. We've lived on the farm in Hartline ever since, raising our beautiful family of 4: Rebekah, age 23, is currently a grad. student in Educational Psychology at Seattle Pacific; Kent, 20, is a sophomore at SPU, interested in communications/journalism; Mark is 12 and Kaleb is 10, and have been homeschooled all their lives. The whole homeschooling thing started when Rebekah was in 5th grade and was a competitive gymnast; since I had my ed. degree, I was interested to see what homeschooling would be like and it seemed it would work well with our traveling to practices and meets all year around. (We actually drove to the gym in Wenatchee 4 times a week, which translates to 170 miles a day from Hartline!)We've been homeschooling ever since, though Bekah and Kent did attend and graduate from Almira/Cou...Expand for more
lee-Hartline high school, and Mark and Kaleb will as well. Needless to say, these have been very busy years! We raise dryland wheat, and Wes also has a floor installation business. I keep the books for the farm, do most of the homeschooling (good thing Wes is so good at math, though!), do the yard and gardening for ourselves and Wes's mom, who still lives here next door, and make sure the kids get to all their sporting events, youth group activities, etc. We also have 3 horses, 3 Rhodesian Ridgeback dogs, dozens of cats, 1 Nigerian Dwarf goat and 1 Netherland Dwarf rabbit! Living in a small town has it's drawbacks (living in a "fishbowl" where everyone knows your business; living so far from anywhere that I have to drive 50 miles for a Safeway, not to mention a Starbucks!), but it has been absolutely wonderful to raise our family. Our college kids bring friends home all the time, so we figure they like home pretty well! I really enjoyed seeing all the people at the Reunion in August; there just was not enough time to get around to talk to everyone! That's the only reason I am sharing my story here, for those of you who are interested. Hi to anyone who reads this, and hope you are all doing well. God Bless! Addenum 2/7/15: I decided to renew my subscription here so that I could share with you (not sure how many Quincy grads actually have a subscription?) a new development in my life. Oct. 24, '14, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Basically for me, this translates to this: since Nov. 4, 2 surgeries, now chemotherapy every 2 weeks for a total of 3 1/2 months, radiation 5 days a week for 6 weeks, then probably in Oct/Nov '15, more reconstruction surgery. Would appreciate your prayers. To any of you out there who has experienced anything like this, I now understand and empathize with you. It is devastating and so hard on a person and their family. Fortunately for me, my prognosis is good and I am hearing that they think it can be cured. I feel very blessed. One day at a time.
