Anntoinette's Story

In Walton I was horribly shy in the 9th grade and came into high school determined to not be tortured and abused as I had been in J.H.S. I had a couple of "quiet crushes" on a few of the basketball ball players, a few of the tall dark-hued guys in my other classes with the deep voices and security guards. In the 10th grade I had my own crew of "Outsiders" and would invite anyone I saw being picked on during lunchtime to join our table. My older brother, Allen Scott, transferred in from Clinton H.S. that year and any male attention I had evaporated with an over protective and huge older brother who played on the basketball and football teams at one time or another.(Sigh!) I was called "Scott's Sister" for most of the rest of school. He was always fighting and I was always being pulled out of class to calm my crazy, overprotective big brother down. We look a lot a like so many thought we were twins, but it was far from the truth. He's a year older and our temperments are very different. It took a moment, but I found team sports and a love for writing and Social Studies and began to find "myself". This was my "loud stage rebellious" stage also and the Deans found me in their offices a lot and they were always suprised. 11th grade I clicked with "Victor" and "Robert"-the two Puerto Rican openly gay guys in Walton and our "Outsider Crew" grew! I was now playing and loving volleyball, losing weightgoing to ballet classes, firming the body, and laughing more! First two boyfriends that summer in summer school, where I took an art class. I had a mad crush on the security guard there named "Pete". I just reread the erotic stuff I wrote about that man in my diary at the age of 14, 15, and 16 and it would burn your finger tips! Was 5ft. 11in and had a very "thin year" that year..., I was a size 12 with rock hard abs! Oh, to get that summer back! lol 12th grade I was done with Walton and the foul education I was getting there. I didn't meet my guidance counselor until a week before I was to graduate and as I walked into the door she asked if I know what I wanted to do! I'd never met her or looked at a college application. At that time I equated graduating with being free to get a full time job at McDonald's. No one had spoken to me about college or my future. Best teachers were Ms. Mirror, Ms. Woods, and a Social Studies teacher who's name escapes me, but he was Jewish, young, unorthodox, and cool. I had found my passion of writing, history, photo...Expand for more
graphy, and childcare. I was involved in other programs outside of school and my Mom had to force me to graduate. I found solace in the fact that I wasn't in school all day and I loved being on the volleyball team, going to English class (which I loved), and playing field hockey. I became close with Crystal, the other tall girl on the volleyball team, and Jackie R., who was as petite as I was tall, but she was my "setter" on the Volleyball team and we had some great moments. Jackie's serve was awesome and I had the height at 5ft. 11inches to block. I didn't go to my prom. No one asked, and I met a few guys later on who said they wanted to ask me, but didn't. I was a quirky, honey-brown teen, who didn't know she was cute, wasn't into make-up or getting pregnant, (scared to death of following a few of my friends), so I wasn't climbing into anyone's "backseat". lol I was hanging out with a few college friends I had from other progams and was sick of Walton H.S. I'm now an educator and I recently heard a teenager on the train complain about the same crap at her high school. Now, having been the bell of the ball in college, nicknamed "Queen" and had it printed on my diploma, I now knew what to tell her. When she said she went to Walton and had the same gym teacher I had I almost passed out. We laughed and then I quickly gave her some important information and "to-do's" so she wouldn't have as many "life-hesitations" as I did as I grew and found "me". Now, I am a Special Education teacher in Harlem, New York. My specialty is Literacy, Social Studies, Art, and Class Management. I am currently at Long Island University adding to my certification. I am the Founder & Director of The Harlem Knitting Circle. Just the words "Harlem and Knitting" and my organizations's site will pop right up! HKC runs at the Harlem Branch Library-9 West 124th St. & 5th Avenue on Saturdays. I'm called by my middle name-Njoya- now, so if you see that name online with my group..., yes, it's me!I am currently single, live with my cat Diego who thinks he's my son, lol, and I will be heading to West Africa this August for a long needed vacation! I didn't buy my ring or go to my prom and I have always regretted that. I think this year I'm going to buy the ring and if there's a reunion or some kind of fancy event for the graduate class of '81 or those who loved English or Volleyball let me know. Or if you want to meet for coffee let me know..., I'm looking to connect!
