Becky's Story

To start, I attended Yelm Kindergarten (Mrs. Brewster), McKenna Elementary School (Mrs. Spencer, Mrs. Wolf, Mrs. Cease, Mr. Coulter, Mrs. McDaniel and her replacement, and Mr. Howick)and Yelm Junior High with almost all of the kids who graduated in '77. During the summer of '74, after my freshman year, my family moved back to Kansas and I graduated from Newton High School in '77. NHS was much larger than YHS and it was a bit of an adjustment. I kept in touch with several classmates during that time, but after a couple of years in college, lost touch with most of them. I am a nurse by profession. I thought I would be a biology teacher (I absolutely loved Mr. Pittoti's class), but marriage and family changed my timeline for college graduation, but I eventually returned and completed my BSN. Just recently, my sister Kathy got me interested in looking up my old friends and classmates. My kids and my niece encouraged me to update my FB recently. That's how they all keep connected anymore. If you're interested, you're welcome to check it out. I'm still in the process of working on it. I hope you all are well. I look forward to hearing from any of my old schoolmates. Your fellow alumni in spirit, Becky Swoyer Hewitt P.S. In grade school, my best friends were Chris Rogers, Gail McCloud, Debbie Sprague, Trisha Dunagan, Carol Pruett and in junior high and high school, Patsy Walker. I'd sure like to get in touch with them. My favorite teachers (besides Mr. P), Ms. Callaghan, Mr. Dickson, Mrs. Lowe, Mr. Coulter, Mrs. Wolf, Things I do to de-stress - walk, think, fish If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have patience, wisdom, and humor to be able to deal with the day-to-day. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel my kitchen and add on a bathroom. My dream home would be a cabin. What I have learned about children...That God has a way of even-ing the score for your own parents Did I ever live in a dorm...no, but I snuck into a few... memorable moment from college-the tornado sirens went off one afternoon (it wasn't ...Expand for more
a drill) and the students in the library and student center (me included) emptied into the commons to try to spot the twister (young and dumb). A childhood memory I'll never forget...In second grade I was watching the boys play softball. I wanted to play. Since it was close to the end of recess, the boys relented and let me bat. Sean Caldwell was pitching and kind of razzing me. The first pitch I hit a towering (for a 2nd grader) fly ball to the outfield. Sean's jaw dropped and I ran the bases (laughing) for a home run. Sean and I became fast friends for the rest of our Yelm years together. Throughout my school years,I continued to participate in every sport I could manage. March 8, 2010 Speaking of Sean... I was just thinking about him back in January after visiting my daughter and her family in Colorado Springs. I had planned on going up to Pike's Peak, but the road was closed. That brought back memories of a field trip to Mt. Rainier. (What class didn't do a field trip to Mt. Rainier?) Anyway... I got on Facebook to tell Sean about the unsuccessful attempt to "summit" Pike's Peak and found several ominous postings there indicating he had passed away. After a couple of inquiries to the post-ers, I found out that was the case. RIP my dear old friend. I'm so glad we had the chance to reconnect, even if it was for just a short while. January 25, 2011 Has it been almost a year? Just dug out my 1974 Tornado yearbook. That was the last year I attended school inYelm. My gosh... the memories. Finally re-putting faces and names together. I've gotten back in touch with Patsy and Carol. I've even FB'd some of my former claddmates and follow what they've been up to. I am scheming together a plan to get my husband to go with me on a trip to the pacific northwest. I found a site dedicated to JP Patches...now that is a blast from the past. He was THE BEST kids (children/teens/adults) show host EVER. I even got a coulpe of DVDs ro show my own Kansas grown kids what they missed out on. I hope to hear from more of you... Becky
