John's Story

Life has been good. After graduating Father Judge in June 1958, I joined the U.S. Navy for a 4 year hitch. The last two years were spent on duty in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. After discharge, I went to work for Publicker Industries, a South Philly based distillery. I met Josie DeStephano in July 1962 and we got married in July 1963. I got a little bored at Publicker and went to work for Domestic Finance Company in late 1963. I opened a new Harrisburg office for Domestic in 1966 and moved to York County, PA. In 1969, I realized that I missed Philly and moved back and returned to Publicker as Assistant Personnel Director. After surviving a drastic change of management, I helped Publicker move Corporate HQ to Greenwich, CT in 1978. I was elected Vice President in 1980. At the age of 46, I retired from Publicker in 1987 and decided to return to York County, PA. My oldest son, Mike, who had already completed a 4 year hitch in the Navy was engaged to get married and he stayed in CT. He now lives there with his wife, two daughters and one son. My daughter, Mary Jane and youngest Son, Tom, moved to PA with us. Tom, who had just graduated high school, enrolled at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, PA, captained the football team his senior year and graduated with a degree in Agronomy, in 1991. Tom and Mary Jane each have 3 children who live near us in Mount Wolf, and Mary Jane has a step-daughter who attends college in Texas.. I finally retired in 2001 as Plant Manager for York Mold, Inc. and have spent the last 9 years nurturing our 10 grandkids; playing an ...Expand for more
awful lot of golf; continuing to participate in the local VFW; helping to form a reunion association for Guantanamo Bay Veterans; and sometimes carrying on like a 30 year old with about 35-40 of my golfing buddies who fortunately still act the same way. I would like to hear from guys who may have known me as a youngster. I always wanted to be a baseball player when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was wishful thinking. As it turns out, they were correct. I love to relax with a cold beer (sometimes more than one). My dad was my hero. We were very close, especially when it came to the Phillies. We went to every one of the home losses in September 1964 and even went to the airport to greet the team after they came home WITHOUT the pennant. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Jim Heher, because we were good buddies, however, I have heard that he passed away. Does anyone know for sure?. My obsessions are playing golf, the Phillies and the Eagles. My children and grandkids are healthy, both physically & mentality. This is one of the best gifts that I have received. My current age is 69. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be in wheelchairs. I was so completely wrong. In 10 years, I hope to be doing the same thing that I do now. I'm going to get there by taking care of my health and staying physically fit. My first job was at Ashbourne Country Club, where I got paid $6 to caddy for two golfers for 18 holes. What I remember most about it is the golfers always bought us great Kosher hot dogs at the 13th hole.
