Robert's Story

The interest section needs more options: As a Messianic Jewish Rabbi (a Jewish Bible scholar/Teacher who serves and follows the Messiah Yeshua [Christ Jesus]), I like inspirational music, southern gospel, and Messianic Jewish praise and worship music. And I am so happy to see that Scripture is being fulfilled in our present times, especially with the growing numbers of Jews and Gentiles who are coming to faith in the Messiah Yeshua (Christ Jesus) as their MASTER, REDEEMER, and FRIEND. If you do not already do so, I urge you to read your Bible, one page or chapter at a time, from cover to cover, over and over. And each time you finish reading a portion, meditate on what you just read, sharing your thoughts with the AUTHOR and FINISHER of your Faith. You will be amazed at how much your faith will grow, especially after you have read through the Bible at least once or twice; most people begin to notice a HUGE difference in their third time through. And if you read it out loud to yourself, it will have a greater impact on your faith and your life (Rom. 10:17). The Bible is such an amazing book!!! It is the only book one can read that can give you the "first time reading experience" every time you start reading it all over again. Each time through, you will discover new things that you did not see or understand before. Blessings to all who are brothers and sisters in the faith, and prayers for all who are not... Okay, that is where I am now, but my journey to get here was long and hard, because I was very stubborn and rebellious. After high school, I hung out with a tough crowd of bikers and gear heads. Some of them died in their chosen life style while others spent time in jail as the result of their life style. And I did a lot of things for which I could have gone to jail. But the ALMIGHTY was watching over me, keeping me just out of reach of getting caught. However, I got away from all of that by going into the US Navy: It wasn't just a job; it was an adventure... Furthermore, it did not hurt that there was an higher calling upon my life, which superceded anything I might have otherwise done to sabotage the purpose for my life. While still a teenager, friends and strangers were telling me that I was called for a life of ministry service, but I wanted none of it. And as a young adult, everywhere I went, I found myself in ministerial positions: Recruit Company Chaplain (Basic Training, US Navy, San Diego NTC); Fraternity Chaplain (Lambda Chi Alpha, Simpson College); Youth Pastor (St. John's UMC); etc... Plus, I found myself being drawn to people in need of help, such as run away teenagers. In college, I worked as an intern in a youth shelter facility, served as a mediator between runaways and their parents, and worked in a shelter facility for the mentally handicapped. Finally, in 1986, I quit running (temporarily) from the ONE I called my Lord and KING. And in 1987, I was ordained a church pastor of the United Methodist Church. In 1990, I was ordained to the position of Missionary Evangelist to Central America (part time) and used my summer vacations to travel and perform missionary services. Then in 2001, I met Moishe Rosen, the founding director of Jews For Jesus, who encouraged me to build up my ministerial credentials, going back to school, and become a Messia...Expand for more
nic Jewish Rabbi. And in 2004, I received my rabbinical ordination. But that was all out front and on the surface. Behind the scenes, as a teenager and as a young adult, I was still very rebellious and wanted nothing to do with ministry. Just like Jonah in the Bible, I wasted so much money and time, trying to run away from the calling I knew was upon my life. However, instead of spending three days in the belly of a giant fish, as was the case for Jonah (in the Bible), I have spent years, in and out of hospitals: * May, 1980: thumb surgery to repair a dislocated thumb with torn cartilage. * March, 1990: 4000 lbs. of steel girder fell on me, crushing my right leg, rupturing 2-3 discs in my spine, cracking two ribs on my right side, spraining my left wrist. And between March of 1990 and September of 1991, I endured seven operations to rebuild my right leg and one operation on my lower back (removing the ruptured discs and spinal fusion). In the 12 months of 1990 alone, I should have died 9 times. * 1999: double hernia with surgical intervention. * 2002: broken neck (surgical spinal fusion, May of 2002); torn rotator cuff in both shoulders (physical therapy for 8 months). * 2004: injured right elbow, diagnosed as tennis elbow with permanent nerve damage. * 2006: broken back (no surgical or therapeutic intervention). * June of 2009: blown out right knee (spent summer in physical therapy). * August of 2009: tumor found in neck, left side, later determined to be cancer (surgically removed, along with other tumors and left side of thyroid, Iowa City VA Hospital, 14 October, 2009). And I now live with the residual pain from all of those experiences. Nevertheless, while the pain does slow me down, I am neither defeated nor deterred by it. In fact, adversity has only served to make me stronger and more impassioned to serve my Great MASTER and KING. Morals of the story: (1) What goes around comes back around. History does repeat itself. And whatever one does in life can have serious consequences, so choose wisely. (2) You can run, but you cannot hide from your CREATOR, the ONE who is ALL-MIGHTY. HE will get you to where you need to be, one way or another, whether you like it or not. (3) You cannot win in a battle against the ALMIGHTY, so do not even try. It is best to surrender, up front, and let HIM show you where you need to be. And those who obey by faith are blessed. Romans 3:10, 23; 6:23 John 3:1-18 Romans 5:8; 10:9-13 Your life will be much richer the sooner you learn this... (4) A loving father disciplines his children as they need it (Eph. 6:4), and our Heavenly FATHER loves us and disciplines us according to our needs. But discipline is never pleasant while one is being disaplined (Heb. 12:4-11). Nevertheless, afterwards, it bears much fruit for those who receive it and do not resist. And obedience, when combined with faith (Rom. 14:23), is the true expression of one's love and devotion toward his/her beloved MASTER, REDEEMER, and FRIEND (John 14:15; Jam. 2:12-26; 1 Jn. 2:3-7; 5:3). And that, my friends, is the secret to true happiness and a fulfilled life. The sooner one learns this lesson, the better his/her life will be. I wish many blessings for those of you who are my brothers and sisters in the One True Faith and many prayers for the salvation of those who are not...
