Dain's Story
After NMMI, I attended the University of Oklahoma on a Navy ROTC scholarship. While at OU, I was a member of Lamba Chi Alpha fraternity. I also received a varsity letter from the gymnastics team. Met my wife Karen at OU, we now have been married 45 years and have two boys and eight grand kids. Graduated from Oklahoma in 1969 with a degree in engineering and went directly into the Navy as a pilot.
After flight school, I was based at NAS Barbers Point in Hawaii flying C118s (basically a Douglas DC6 with a cargo door. Our primary mission was flying Navy personnel including UDT teams into S.E. Asia. ). One of our interesting missions was moving nuclear weapons around the US. The bomb we moved were considered tactical weapons. One of the strangest flights I had was when we took a MK58 atomic bomb to Alaska, Our navigator sent out two incorrect position reports so the Air Force launched two escort planes. After leaving the Navy in 1974, took a job as a bush pilot in Sioux Lookout Ontario flying teachers, doctors and nurses into northern Canada. The coldest day that I went flying was 42 below zero. During the summer, the planes were on floats and flew hunters and fishermen. I stayed in Canada for two years. When my temporary visa expired, we moved back to Santa Fe and got into the real estate business.
My real estate business lead to a job with the ERA Real Estate franchise in Kansas City where I became the senior VP of franchising. I later was recruited to become the president of HomeVestors. The company became known as the "We Buy Ugly Houses" company based on our billboard campaign nation wide.
Now living in the Kansas City area (Olathe). My wife, Karen and I own a publishing company called TheHomeMag. The magazine is mailed to 103,000 homes every month. This is our 7th year in the publishing business. My son runs the company and I play a lot of golf.
