Carol's Story

Hi Classmates, It's hard to believe it's been so long since we graduated! Here's some information on my life, I met my husband Eugene (Buck), January 13th 1962. We got married the day after we graduated, June 16th and have been married ever since. We have four children 3 girls, Stephanie, Jennifer and Kristina. 1 Son, Eugene (Little Buck), not so little anymore, he stands over 6'. We have 5 grand daughters (Jenny's), She and her husband are celebrating 19 years of marriage this year by going on a cruise. Grandma gets to take care of the grandkids. Stephanie has one son,. She is not in any relationship at this time. Our son, Bucky has been with his special lady Melanie for over 15 years. No kids. Kristina is living in Mora, MN in a group home for Autistic Women. She lived at home with us until she was 19 1/2 years old and made our lives interesting and challenging. We've lived in Coon Rapids for 41 years. After marrying Buck, we lived in Stillwater for several months in a rooming house (1 room, shared bath). I think the rent was $25 a month. Quite cozy. Buck was offered a job in construction and we moved to Robbinsdale, living in a furnished efficiency apartment (85 dollars). Oh and by the way we did not have a car, so our traveling was done by walking, MTC or Greyhound bus. The fellow Buck worked with provided transportation until we finally got our first car, a 1956 Chevy Bel air, 2 door, two tone baby blue and white. I found work through an employment agency (permanent employment). Worked as an office clerk for Minneapolis Term. Warehouse, taking and billing orders for goods. When I was 19 I was involved in a car accident that injured my lower spine, resulting in disc surgery two years later. I've been very fortunate that I've had no major problems with my back since then. We had five years of just Buck and I and we enjoyed settling into married life. Stephanie was born in 1967, and we decided to build a home in Coon Rapids. What a year that was, we had different idea's about just about everything. Anyway, we survived and are still living in that home 41 years later. I was a stay at home Mom for about 6 months and went back to work for another year. I was working at Sperry Univac for a couple of years prior to Steph's birth. Returned into the position of private secretary (my career goal in high school). Decided we wanted to add to our family and had our son almost 2 years after Stephanie. Both were May babies. At that time a woman could only work until her seventh month at Sperry Univac, amazing how times have changed! Kept busy as a Mom, adding two more children in the next 2 1/2 years. When we brought Kristina home from the hospital l(5 day stay, thank God), Stephanie was 4 1/2 yrs, Bucky 2 1/2, Jenny 18 months, so was kept pretty busy changing diapers and all the fun things with caring for the kids. I spent the next 6 years being a stay at home mom, keeping very busy with four little ones. Buck was working nights at Elec. Machinery on 8th and Central. When Kristina was about 10 months old she started refusing baby food which I attributed to teething. At 11 months she started turning away from me when I would approach her in her mesh playpen and I thought what an independent little stinker. Her withdrawal from interacting with us began probably at about 10 months and continued to the point that I was concerned enough to ask her Doctor if something was wrong with her. He said she was within the range of normal development, so took her home and tried not to worry. Two weeks later I decided that I wanted to see a specialist as by now I was sure something wasn't right. She was 14 months old and wasn't talking, wouldn't eat food, was spending most of her time rocking sitting in one spot. So my Dr set up an appointment with a neurologist in Golden Valley who we went to see in Sept. '73, they did some "t...Expand for more
esting" and said they thought they were seeing Autism, which I had never heard of and wanted to put her in the hospital to rule some things out. This finally occurred when she was almost 2 years old, so it took a long time (I think). After a 3 day stay at Children's in South Mpls. Many interesting things occurred during her stay; she actually would now drink a bottle with "some" baby food mixed in which I had tried over the course of a year and she would refuse no matter how little I put in. Just goes to show you how true that saying about kids of "when you want them to they won't but when you say they won't they do". It was a pretty rough time for me, Dad was home with the other three and our communication was by phone. Her diagnoses was Infantile Autism. So we spent the next two to three years learning as much as we could about this "Autism" and there wasn't much available. It was also identified that she was hearing impaired, so an auditory amplifier was put around her neck, which she used until she would tolerate hearing aids at about 8 years of age. It was extremely frustrating to not have much information about Autism and I read everything I could get my hands on. Today thank god there are so many more resources available. Kris continued to remain in our home until she was 19 and a half. She presented so many challenges to the whole family but also brought many joys and a better understanding of how precious life really is. Her siblings were great with her and put up with many "destroyed" toys, etc. Overall our family experienced many different issues over the years as I'm sure most of you have as well. Adolescence presented many more problems than those that existed when we were going up. Two children suffered teenage depression. Family therapy and hospitalization helped and they've grown to become healthy adults. In 1976 Buck's company (EM) went on strike which lasted 11 weeks, a long time to not have any income, so I searched and found a part time job working nights at Northwestern Natl. Bank in downtown Mpls. Over the next 25 years I held jobs that I never would have guessed that I would. My beginning position was Lock-box processing Clerk making 1.55 an hour working about 24 hours a week. Sunday, Monday and Wednesday nights (11pm - 6 am), then home to get the kids off to school, try to get some sleep during the day. Buck was now working days after 10 years of working third & second shift. He was a Machinist working on a 42" Boring Mill working with close tolerances for over 35 years. For me during the next 25 years at Northwestern (Weather Ball) Bank which became Norwest Bank, which became Wells Fargo I worked 10 years on nights(second and third) in clerical positions, group leader, Supervisor and Shift Manager. Working in bank operations and becoming a VP during those years was very rewarding. During the last 2 1/2 years at Wells Fargo, I worked as a project manager and traveled extensively across the country working on Bank acquisitions. I retired in 2001 as Buck became permanently disabled in 1999 (two disc fusions in his neck) after many years of pulling on his machine at work. He is physically able to do most things but has lifting/pulling restrictions. We do enjoy our lives, grandchildren and family. Our retirement years haven't been as busy as we'd like with traveling but hope to find the means and time to get away more soon. Over the years we've been to Hawaii, Alaska, Canada fishing trips, many cruises(my favorite) but have not been to Europe yet. Buck and I will be married 50 years on June 16th 2012. Looking forward to the School 50th Reunion and seeing many classmates. Update: Short and sweet, built new home on Mille Lacs Lake, trying to move stuff in but after 45 years in the same home, way too much stuff, it has to go somewhere else, LOL. Loved seeing everyone at the Class Reunion.
