More about Sarah:"Don't suffer from insanity, enjoy every minute of it! Why grow up? Once a Girl Scout, Always a Girl Scout! Absolute, totally, not a game person!!! Monarchs Rule! BOOKS: For me, as a collector/reader of vintage science fiction, the thrill of the hunt for a forgotten book from the past is a huge part of my book enjoyment. The fun of sniffing out used and rare bookstores, travelling to small towns with their unique charms, poking through the shelves in little downtown owner-operated bookstores with tin ceilings, meeting and petting the store cat, conversing with the owner about a good lunch place or gift shop, the triumph of finding a 50 cent (where did the cents key go on this keyboard?) clearance book that's been on my want list for years, emerging two hours later with a satisfyingly heavy bag of books, even following the trail of stamps on the front page that tell me of the travels of this particular volume, no Kindle will ever replace these ancillary book experiences for me!  Reading the actual book is, of course, the primary activity but the whole experience is important to me. Even the downside of finding space for storage of my books (I'm currently triple-shelved.) and retaining control of their numb...Expand for more
ers (I recommend Books for Soldiers; sending your books to soldiers who want them is patriotic AND tax-deductible.) is absorbing for me. I have an inventory program on my computer to help prevent buying duplicates (and triplicates, I confess!) and track my progress in filling out series and finding obscure early works of my favorite authors. I have found the Internet to be helpful in finding those stores; I never go to conferences or on vacation without previously researching a list of bookstores to check out. I also use it to keep up with the latest books written by my favorite authors. I guess I'm an addict. Yes, Virginia, there are atheists and I am One. Instilling a belief in a "God" whose existence is unsupported by facts or science is not the only way to raise children who act ethically for the benefit of their society. I prefer my ethics carefully thought out, discussed freely, subject to change when circumstances so dictate, and free of threats of the wrath of God. This does not make me immoral, does not mean I am raising my children free of conscience, and does not make me a monster. Those who are so caught up in their belief in their PARTICULAR God are simply patting themselves on the back that they picked the "right" God. I hope they can self-examine their beliefs and pull back from this self-congratulatory attitude and realize there are many ways to approach ethical living in a human society. Condemning those of us who believe in a rational ethic doesn't help our society; the focus needs to be on the folks who teach NO ethics to their children. And that's not most atheists, thank you. Does it seem strange and contradictory to anyone else that so many of those who are the first to say "Government stay out of my life; don't dictate to me" are some of the first to bow down to a supernatural being and say "Thy will be done."? Beats me for logic...".
