Christine's Story

After college, I became a Certified Nurse Aide. I loved working with the elderly but wanted to get into natural healing to help empower & inspire people to take great care of themselves. I studied natural wellness, herbalogy, iridology, reflexology, aromatherapy, spiritual healing, natural childbirth, you name it. Then in 2004 I learned the Raindrop Technique at a seminar. I was hooked! That's when I knew massage therapy would be part of my future. A few months later, an opportunity to attend massage school suddenly opened up, and even though it looked impossible for me to go at that time, I took the leap. Somehow, miraculously, it worked out. I'm so happy to find work I love, helping people! Massage therapy is definitely my calling and it fills my soul with joy to be of real service to people who are stressed out or in pain. Part of school was doing 110 massages, and by the time I graduated & passed my boards, I had built a clientele near the school, 2 hours from my home. I started looking for land and after a year of fruitless searching, found a gorgeous piece of undeveloped land and bought it. I took a huge leap of faith in March '08 and moved with my 3 children into a 8' x 31' camper while I designed and built myself a house (for the record, living in 200-sq.ft. with 3 children was an absolute nightmare--I don't recommend it! But it got us where we wanted to be so was worth it to us.) On Sept. 1, 2008, I started building my house. Already nights were getting chilly, so I built every day when I wasn't at work. I had to get my kids into shelter before winter! The kids helped most days, and my semi-estranged husband came to help on weekends. We got the first floor built, and in mid-October, a group of friends came over for a build day. This was so much fun & a dream come true for me. We built all the upstairs walls tha...Expand for more
t day! Now nights were starting to get cold, so I kicked things up several notches. I started building from dawn til dark every day, and then I got a worklight so even the darkness wouldn't stop me. Some days I built from dawn until after midnight. My husband came for 6 weeks to help erect the roof, and a builder friend got worried for us and came to help a lot of days in late October & November. Things were moving along fast now! December 14 was a gorgeous 60-degree day. I was shingling the roof when I heard the radio say that night would be 12 degrees, and the next day, 0. I called, "Kids, go get your sleeping bags...we're moving in!" Even partially insulated, the earth-sheltered passive solar house stayed at 45 degrees when outside was in the teens and the camper hovered at freezing. It was a huge improvement and even unfinished, it felt like a mansion compared to the camper! There were so many days when I felt daunted and thought, "What on earth was I thinking?!" My only experience was designing & partially building a 7'x8' chicken shed. I had lots of books and lots of people I could call when I got stuck for ideas on how to do something, but when it came right down to it, I was mostly on my own day-to-day and had to learn to count on myself to get things done. It was pretty scary sometimes, but I learned an awful lot. I feel like none of this would have happened if I hadn't gone out and found work I love. Massage made it all possible for me, made it possible to envision creating a new life for myself. Building my own house is the most fun I have ever had. I can't wait to go to architect school someday and to apprentice with a real carpenter! Just two of the 100 things on my list of things to do before I die! I have changed my name to Maya Windfeather and am on Facebook, for anyone who would like to contact me.
