Pat's Story

Hey all! From the words of Coach Red Dawson (Marshall University) when I saw him at the memorial before the movie was released, he said to me: "Pat? Last time I saw you, you were standing over there, holding a picket sign, fighting against an unjust war, burning your bra and fighting for equal rights and social injustice. What are you doing now? My response was: "well, I'm fighting against an unjust war, fighting for social injustice and equal rights! I guess some things never change! I work as a political consultant now. And after they are elected, stay on them, to do the things they promised.( I know! What a concept!--a politician actually doing 'some' of the things they promised! That in itself can take up most of your time. My sister Pam and I keep talking about coming to one of the reunions, but never fail, we always get the date wrong. And for Nitro days. I long for the good ol days at nitro, but to tell the truth, don't know if I could live through those days again....I was lucky I made it the first time! My great nephew goes to Hurricane (eek high school this year) but while at Hurricane Middle, Perry Estep was his coach....and a great one at that. I hope to keep up with those of you that remember me. Some of the names have gone by the way side along with a few brain cells----those 70's were a killer! lol My life consist of arguing with the State Road (that's a full time job in itself)..but one that's kept me alive. When I'm having a bad day? I just call the State Road and give em heck! I'd recommend it for anyone that maybe lonely or bored. I never can have enough help! If you talk to them tell 'em Pat sent you! I have a feeling theres not a State DOH around that doesn't know me. The good news is, I KNOW without a doubt, no matter where I'm buried, the State will lend a hand to make sure I have a road for people to get there and will probably throw in cement on top of me JUST to make sure I dont come back! lol At home I have a Black Lab (rescue dog) named Murphy, whos 3. errier (rescued puppy)who will be a year old Sept 11th. 2 cats Scoobie Doo that's 10 and his mama Baby that's 11. I spend most of my time with family and Marshall Football! Hope this finds all well. And hopefully Pam and I can actually get a date right and come to one of the reunions or Nitro Days. I'd love to see a lot of my buds from way back then. I am glad I found the site (it was pure accident) the only question that I wish had another choice of answer, was the question about: What did we get from college(studying)? My answer would have been a great big hangover! That's about all I remember from Marshall, except for the crash and Margaret Knapp. O how I'd love to see her again. I was humbled to have been asked to help with some of the details for the "Marshall Movie" by a friend and Senator of mine. Even tho' it was hard recalling that fateful night, I wouldn't have traded the experiance. I was able to meet and speak with the Director McG and the writer and producer and was humbled when asked to join them during the private 'family' showing of the film. While at the memorial I ran into the sisters of my very good friend Mike Blake, that was killed in the crash. One of his sisters was very young at the time of the crash, so I was able to fill her in on what a great friend he was. As hard as it was for a lot of us, with it brought a new pride for Marshall Football. I retired as Operations Supervisor, in South Florida, for Well's Fargo....many years ago, due to health reasons. And am currently being seen by University of Kentucky Transplant Center....a great place if lord forbid, anyone would ever need to go there. I have miraculously out lived any expectations any of the Drs. had, to the point they've just tossed the book away! I guess it's that stubborn Sharp in me..that dad always preached to never give up and to never give in! Hope this finds all well. And look forward soon to catching up w/ all and remembering the 'good ol days' O btw. The Doctorate I received? Was a PHD in BS. -pat
