Gary's Story
I have been a high school teacher for 23 years in southern New Hampshire. In 2003, my wife of 21 years died after a valiant battle with breast cancer. I have two stepkids who are married and have families; our daughter graduated college in 2008 and is living in the Boston area. In late 2006, I remarried--to the person who was my closest friend in my last year and a half of college(SUNY Cortland), and is a professor in the College of Education at Eastern Michigan University. on a PhD in Geography at Michigan State University. I finished my first year of coursework in May 2009, and have one more year of that to go. My work focuses on the impact of economic globalization on small farmers in Jamaica (hey, this research stuff is tough!). I return to my high school teaching job in fall 2010, and HOPE to complete my dissertation a year or so after that. At that point, I'll be eligible for my school district's early retirement package, so then we'll see what happens! I may be up for a second career in higher education!
