I am Van Dexter Rutledge, I like using the internet, helping people and making money. If you are anything like me, you love using the internet and making money, but first let me tell you a little about myself. I was born in South Carolina, where the mentality is expressed as such ¿finish high school and get a job and save some money, then if I want, I can take a few college classes and see how well it works out. I observed the people in my small town and made a decision in 1981 to succeed. I decided that the first item I needed to change was the environmental setting of a small town. I joined the United States Army in 1982 in order to travel to another place and absorb new places and people. I chose a job in Avionic which is Aircraft Electronics. During that time, my leadership skills were developed as well as my character. I learned the value of given my word and what integrity means. The one mental challenge was the feeling of having more potential that pay. I would read about people who were extremely successful, who were risk takers or out of the box thinkers. I identified with that group but didn¿t know how to go about building wealth as an independent business owner of some sort. I found a mentor, Mr. Melvin, in the book publishing business. I went to his book publishing company and ask to work there on my free time during my enlistment in the Army. Mr. Melvin wouldn¿t meet with me the day I visited his company. I came back again the next day and again he was too busy to speak with me. I came back a third and fourth day, until finally, Mr. Melvin succumbs to see me and in fact, he took me to lunch to talk with me. I became a volunteer at his company when he wouldn¿t hire me. I recognize the value of learning and experience in the actual field of book publishing. I kept a journal of everything I learned and within 16 months, I opened my first home business in which I sold books thru the mail. I didn¿t have my own books or catalogue but I locate some good deals on left over book and sold them. I put photos of them on a sheet of bright colored paper and mail the sheet to a list of book buyers. When the orders came in, they were filled immediately and a new two page catalog was mail out. Within 2 years, I had sold more than 50,000 books, tapes and CDs. The business grew and I hired college students to help with the packaging.
