Julie's Story

When I graduated from high school I went to Eastern Michigan Univ. I wanted to get an Elementary Teaching Degree, but at that time my teachers and counselors were saying that there weren't many teaching jobs available. So I changed course and decided to get a Criminal Justice Degree. I was only at Eastern for 1 semester at that time, but I am so glad I was, because I met my good friend Ilene. We are still very close friends and we get together at least once a month. After that first semester I headed back to Delta and S.V.S.U. to earn my Associates and then Bachelors Degree in Crimal Justice. By this time I realized I still truly wanted to be a teacher so I headed back to Eastern and earned my Elementary Teaching Certificate for grades K-8. Teaching jobs were tough to find. I substitute taught for 1 semester then taught Kindergarten at a Parochial School for the next semester and went on to teach a couple years of 5th grade in the Parocial Schools. During this time I also returned to S.V.S.U. to earn my Special Education Certificate to teach students with Learning Disability. As soon as I was certified as a Special Education Teacher the interviews and job offers started coming in. I decided to take the Special Education postion in the Swan Valley School District and I have been teaching 4th and 5th grade students with learning disabilities for the last 15 years. I love my teaching job, so I am a true believer in encouraging students to pursue whatever they truly want to be. Okay now the personal life. I married for the first time when I was 20, it lasted about 7 years. I would never trade that time because it gave me my son Nickolas, who is currently 16 years old and just started driving, scary! He is a junior at Western High School and plays football, swims, and runs track. He also just started his first job, so he has gas and insurance money! Let's see, then I was single for a couple of years and until I met my current husband, Jim Mader. ...Expand for more
We have been married for 12 years and we have a daughter Emily, who is 9 and is starting 4th grade this year. She goes to Auburn Elementary and absolutely loves school and her friends. She plays softball and also swims. One great perk of being a teacher is having the whole summer off. We spend most of the summer camping at Outdoor Adventures and various Sister Parks. The kids love camping. We swim in pools and lakes and rivers. We tube, canoe, kayak, and ride our 4-wheelers. We take lots of walks with the dogs, bike ride, go to parks, and have lots of campfires with smores of course! Oh, and I also get to catch up on reading lots of great books, that I'm too busy to read during the school year. My friend, Ilene, that I met in that first semester at Eastern is a Speech Thearpist for the Ypsilanti School district so she has the summers off too and her family camps with us all summer too. She is a great friend and it has been fun raising our kids together. I think that about sums up the last 25 years. So now I'll just answer a couple of the fun Story Wizard Questions. 1. Which teacher would you love to see again and why? I would love to see Mr. Ruterbush again. I was pretty quiet in high school and he always made me feel welcome and made me smile. I also really enjoyed the Genetics material he taught in science. He was a great teacher that made sure no student went unnoticed. 2. If I won 100 million dollars.... I would give my 2 sisters, my brother, and my parents at least 1 million dollars each. I would buy a nice cottage on a lake. We would have a nice dock and I would get a boat and kayaks. We would also want some hunting property near there where the family could hunt, shoot, 4 wheel and so on. I am also sure we would travel a little bit to nice warm sunny places with clear blue water and beautiful beaches. Nice dream, huh! I look forward to reading some of your stories about the last 25 years! Julie (Meyers) Mader
